Well, our prayers have been answered.
The 3G iPhone will be available July 11 for $199 (8GB) and $299 (16GB).
The new slimmer iPhone will have a curvier plastic back available in black for the 8GB iPhone, and black or white for the 16GB iPhone. No more getting your iPhones mixed up with your roomies'.
The newest iPhone features 3G data transfer speeds and built-in GPS.
Battery life is improved: about 300 hours standby time, 10 hours talk time on the 2G network, 5 hours talk time on a 3G network, 5 hours of 3G high-speed Web browsing, 6 hours of Wi-Fi high-speed Web browsing, 24 hours audio playback, and 7 hours video playback.
The new iPhone will roll out in 20 countries initially on July 11 and will eventually hit 70 countries.

The Surface:
AT&T subsidizes iPhone. AT&T raises the monthly service by $10.
(in itself, not a big deal, AT&T is using this money to expand and reinforce the network for this phone. This has been reported elsewhere, how true it is, who knows, but I have seen articles about the subject.)End result, phone is more expensive over the long run than the last one. Thats the way things work.
However, now we have The Underlying Problem Part 1:
Hardware manufacturers need to stick to hardware, and service providers need to stick to services. Deals such as this are NOT beneficial to the consumer. If you could go to an Apple store, buy the iPhone, and go wherever you want for the service, it would promote competition, and keep prices and fees in check. It doesn't really make sense for Apple either, there will be many people who can't afford an iPhone because of the limitations put to them by AT&T. Oh wait, there is all that money that AT&T will be funneling back to Apple. Gee... Oh, and the extra fees they get to charge because they can, without you taking your iPhone business elsewhere (since Apple has made sure we can't do that), can't forget that one. Oh, and bigger down payments, can't forget the majority of the populace with less than stellar credit. Deals like this will NEVER benefit the consumer, only empower an outside entity to manipulate pricing to their own liking and benefit.
The Underlying Problem Part Duex (Deux? 2?):
Apple and AT&T will get away with this. With big pockets overflowing with our money. Think about that for a second. The people who are concerned with the morality of this deal are far outnumbered by the blind ones who see nothing but iPhone bliss, and will pay whatever they have to to achieve that bliss, or should I say "status"? Do you think that Apple and AT&T don't want to keep the iPhone's profile to be that of a status symbol? If they didn't, Apple never would have limited the sales of THEIR product by involving another corporation to have a hand in defining who can afford it, and who can't.
And in case you were wondering, yes, I would rather pay a higher price for the iPhone in exchange for having my own choice of service providers. Even if AT&T ended up being the cheapest, at least I would have a say in who my monthly payment goes to. We do live the land of freedom, don't we?

Most of the folks posting comments are making statements in a vacuum, i.e., expensive compared to what? Full-featured compared to what? It's totally legit to wish that a full-featured smartphone only cost $50 and has a voice and data plan of $50 a month, but no one is anywhere close to that.
One poster referred to Nokia's very cool high-end N96 and N98 phones without mentioning their price, the voice and data plans available for them, and the fact that they only work with Nokia's almost-proprietary web browser and other applications. Some of the announced "iPhone clones" are simply mid-quality cellphones with some amount of touch control.
One of the benefits of the new iPhone will hopefully be a drop in the prices of other smartphones, and that's where the comparison lies. I don't care all that much about the camera, but I am interested in quality html web browsing, email synchronization, GPS, applications and speed. At this point it's not clear that anyone comes close to the iPhone's features and price, even if we might wish the price were lower.
You can always put off your purchase another year or two...

What did any of us have 10 years ago? Analog, high priced brick phones and lousy reception. Today, is a renaissance for communications. Did anyone actually see the keynote? The SDK will revolutionize software porting to iPhone. The .Mac users go virtually live with me.com synchronizing.The 3G speed is going to be almost as speedy as WIFI.
The last useful device for talking and GPS navigation was the iQue, and it cost twice the price at half the battery life. Hold on to your powdered donuts and Red Bull. This is the geekiest device to date! Get on the bandwagon for crying out load.

I'm wondering if reading this website has been the cause of the disappointment with the new iphone. Normally an ipod, GPS, internet, and phone in one device would be great but we hyped up features that they couldn't all fit into the little case. I was looking forward to video conferencing and strangely to AM/FM radio which would be useful at the gym to hear the tvs while on the treadmill that only send out a FM signal for audio. Seems small but still not support for it on the iphone...as far as I know. I probably only have on buddy that will have the new iphone too so video conferencing would be cool but not really necessary.
I'm going to have to buy it because I've waited a whole year for the 3G and can't stand to wait another for 2 extra features that I may or may not use. What I can say is the important features like GPS and a fast 3G are in fact here and will be used plenty. Three years ago I said if I could access the internet, have a phone, have GPS, and have an ipod in one device I'd be all set. That said, this should be one heck of a cool toy.

Wake up everyone. 3G is a shared network environment. There is not enough capacity to support video calling, slingbox and other fan boy technologies. If a carrier makes that service available then be prepared to pay through the nose for it.
The scarcity of capacity in a 3G or 4G environment is the same reason why open access networks will not work or will not be truly open.

Very Disappointed at the 3G iPhone. The new iPhone is virtually the same as the old 2G iPhone, except the 3G and GPS. What happens to 2-way Video Conference call, higher pixel camera, video recording capability, camera flash light and maybe even Mobile Digital TV receiver.
The Nokia N96 and N98 has all of the above mentioned functions and more...
I was thinking about getting the 3G iPhone, but after seeing the actual specification I am now considering the Nokia N96 or N98 instead.
Come on, all the above mentioned features are essential to a 3G phone. All 3G phones in Europe and Asia has most, if not, all the above features.
Apple shouldn't call the 3G iPhone "3G"; instead, they should call it the GPS iPhone with fast internet access.
I really like Apple products, but this time, it is way under my expectation for a 3G phone.

The iphone is boss! I have had the blackberry, the treo and assorted other phones and none have compared with the iphone. FYI - electronics = buy it before the price comes down. I agree that the task list should sync however that will come. Anybody that has the blackberry will surely agree that it is very limited as far as the functionality is concerned. Apple makes products that are a total pleasure to use and are beautiful to look at. GPS is a welcomed addition and the faster connection is a total plus. I have a crack for the video capture and it is awesome. The date plan at $30.00 is a bargain and combine that with the new .mac service and this is a very cool tool. I just bought my 8g 2 months ago and will have the 8g on the day it is released - it is a huge bargain. Buy a Crackberry for $400.00 and see how it doesnt compare, the nokia is also a cumbersome gadget whos os locks up constantly.

I must say that despite the fact the many of the rumors, were simply rumors they made us all go ooooo and ahhhh, the new iphone shouldn't be called a "new" but an upgrade...for a company of Apple caliber I wonder where did all the R&D go - it was a waste if this is all the came up with...
The "new iPhone" lacks novelty now...but leave it up to us hackers to beef it up and teach Apple a thing or four...
Apple needs to hire the real creative minds that are circulating the rumors regarding the "new iphone's" capabilities and the macbook/iphone tablet as they are more forward thinking and innovative.
Just imagine if the iphone really had a second camera for conferencing and recording... today would have marked a glorious day for Apple - whose stock would have seen the 220 bar.

You know, I am getting tired of sarcastic people who expect prices on tech items to be low when they buy, but then stay the same when a new model comes out.
So, you are mad that Apple dropped the price of the new iPhone 3G. Well guess what? Prices on all tech items drop often. Even your car isn't worth nearly what you bought it for. So, suck it up. If you don't like Apple or their price drops, don't buy their products. RIM would love to sell you a Blackberry.

Again...Apple isn't dropping the price on the iPhone. Unlike the initial launch of the iPhone this time around AT&T is subsidizing it.
Otherwise Apple would have to drop the prices on the rest of the iPod lineup.

AT&T is going to charge an extra $10 a month for the Data Plan which was only $20 a month and now it will be $30 a month. Over the 2 year agreement that is another $240 dollars for AT&T! Add that to the $199 you paid for the phone, and you really paid $439 for a $399 phone! They are now using what I call "Car Dealership" selling practices. I think $30 is too much a month for data on my phone when Bluetooth is crippled and it can't be used as a modem! We need people to wake up and let these things sit on the shelves until AT&T lowers the price back to $20 a month or at least acknowledge that they actually raised prices. I understand that they run a business, but don't let Steve "Check Off" a lower priced iphone on his list and treat us all like we are stupid!!!

Now the 8GB iPod Nano and the 8GB iPhone cost the same. However the 8GB iPod touch costs more. That makes absolutely no sense at all. Hopefully Apple will bring down the prices of the iPod Touch and the iPod Nano. Cross your fingers!!!

ATT is subsidizing the 3G iPhone. You pay $200 for the phone and an additional $10/mo for 24 months, which brings real cost to $440. Of course, ATT has no interest in subsidizing the iPod, so you pay full retail, which is less.

I'd love to hear Apple's justification for this one. Must have something to do with the reception. Aluminum sure would dissipate the heat better. Lighter, more durable (?), more eco friendly, and more attractive (personally), too.

I know that June isn't Apple's prime new product time, but I'm very disappointed with what WASN"T talked about. I guess Mr. Steve has forgotten that Apple is more than just the iPhone. Yes, rumors are floating around about a new MacBook, and I didn't expect to see one, but this would have been prime time for a memory hike in the other stuff, like the Touch and Nano. Looks like I'm stuck with a slow 4 GB iPhone for a few more months.
No 32 GB iPhone, no 16 GB Nano... no money from me for Apple. I won't buy into the scam...

With the last iphones you bought the phone at either the AT&T store or the Apple store then activated it at home through iTunes.
AT&T stores will be able to explain their rate plans to you but I'm pretty sure you could get the phone at either with no problem.

There are questions that I have that will likely make me immensly unpopular in this forum. Not sure if the iPhone is right for me.
1. Voice Dailing? I do use that quite a bit.
2. No Video? Even my cheap LG I currently have shoots
video, poor quality, but it works.
3. I don't see much difference between last generation
and the new one bsides 3G and $$
4. AT&T 3G network isn't exactly prolific.
5. Maybe instead of getting a new one, I'll buy one of

This is pathetic, Apple. Really: you encourage people to use To Dos by building them into iCal and more recently into Mail....and then you refuse support the same feature in the iPhone, where it could really be useful!
That's just plain stupid, and it mars an otherwise great product.

Apple and AT&T have a strict contract, so even if you don't want the 2 year contract, when you shell out the $199 or $299 you still get signed up for the 2 year service.
