Spanish technology company, SevenClick, reports that Apple will release a 3G version of the iPhone in May 2008.
The companies blog reports that it got the information from senior management at Telefonica. Telefonica Spain had hoped to launch the iPhone in that country along with Germany, France and the UK this year. Unfortunately, Apple couldn't supply enough iPhones and Telefonica wanted to negotiate the 30% revenue cut Apple asked for.
New iPhones announced in January? If we all wish really, really hard it might just happen.

Sounds reasonable...
Apple is on a 1 year cadence with iPods and will mostly like push the same with the iPhone. The challenge is getting through regulatory and carrier certification, which is when the design gets "out in the wild". Being Apple they'll keep it under wraps until last possible moment.
My bet is 2nd Gen iPhone (w/ 3G) announcement at WWDC'08. Also betting on mini Tablet type device at Macworld in Jan if it's ready. Lot's of independent indicators are looking that way... Technical challenges may put a damper on the Jan date...
you sound Oh so smart....
