Animated GIFs in OS X

I just switched from the PC to the Mac, and one of my favorite files is an animated GIF of a dancing cat. When I double-click this file on my Mac, it doesn’t work. Are GIF files PC-only?
Animated GIFs will play just fine on your Mac, but they won’t play within Preview, which is the default app for viewing GIF files. To see your cat boogie, you’ll need to open it in a Web browser—just drag the GIF file onto the Safari or Firefox icon in your Dock.

The dancin’ kitty will stay in Safari, and any other GIF files will open in Safari too.
To change the default app for animated GIFs, click the GIF file icon and press Command-I. Under Open With, select your favorite browser from the drop-down menu and then click the Change All button. Then you can double-click the file to see the cat cut the rug.
