Apple Cheaping Out on Its Employees?

Come on, Steve only makes a dollar, so what's the big deal? Well, this: It's come to light that Apple's software engineers make significantly less than their counterparts at other Silicon Valley companies. New startup Glassdoor collected the salary information (seen here in handy bar-chart format), finding that Apple engineers make $89K while Microsoft and Yahoo pay $105K and Google more than $112K.

So now people are wondering if the company will experience a talent exodus, be forced to raise salaries, or merely remain secure in its belief that the employees want to work at Apple because it's Apple.

Blogger Oren Hurvitz then calculated what the lower salaries may have meant to Apple's bottom line in recent years, with interesting results, while CNET's Matt Asay points out that they get stock too. (Check out the back-and-forth in the comments about whether those stock options are really worth the lower salary, especially with the roller-coaster ride Apple stock has been on lately.)

What do you think, would you be cool with making $19K less if it meant you were working at 1 Infinite Loop and not...wherever Yahoo's building is? Or do you think Apple should share the wealth a little more? (Or do you just wish you had a job?) Sound off in the comments -- you know you want to.

Where should the rest of the money go? Apple made 1.9 Billion last year. If the money is NOT going to the talent (developers) who should it go too?, the suits??

Many, many years ago my grandfather told me that it never did him any good to know what someone else was making.

That pay is not representative of the entire state. When I was an engineering manager in Central California, we lost talented engineers (the slugs stayed) to the "Bay Area." What Apple will find, prestige only goes so far at the gas pump, grocery store, and rent. After that, engineers vote with their feet. As a profession, we tend to be mercenaries.

Here in South Lousiana with a much lower cost of living, engineers are paid well for the cost of living. Most of us work in the oil service industry like Silicon Valley where the work in the electronic and systems world. Despite being in the Oil Service Bayou, most of us know that when job conditions and pay slip, the HR jerks have to try and locate talent that is often hard to find.

With the cost of living going higher and higher and the wages not going anywhere I would say 89K a year is great right now. Most people need to have a job making 15$/hr. just to keep up with gas, rent and food prices. When you work that out if you are lucky enough to get 40hrs. then that is just enough to breath. So I suppose that a person making around 7k a month should be quite happy until the cost of living catches up with them. Not many people get 15$/hr. and I doubt the Apple retail employees make that; so maybe that is what should be questioned. I know many software engineers who would love to make that amount of money. Apple should share the wealth with the lower end employees who are working just as hard and need the money more right now.

ONLY 89K? Per YEAR? Oh my goodness, let me break out my six pack of miniature violens! No wonder Indians are swimming in from New Delhi to "accept" such exploitive wages!

Maybe those yahoos over at Yahoo are OVER paid, maybe?

89k is a lot, or not a lot, depending on which state your from. $400k could probably buy a mansion in Tennessee, but it'd buy you a dainty house in the heart of Silicon Valley. Let's remember that the people that live in California are also paying $4.50 for Regular Gas, have a sales tax of 8.25%, and in general, pay more for things.

The article wasn't trying to get the Apple software engineers a higher wage, they're just wondering what keeps software engineers at Apple (other benefits, the cool factor, etc) if comparable companies are paying less.

If I could buy a house in San Francisco for $400k, I would dance in the street.

Everyone I know who works at Apple is either:

1. A sold, brainwashed zombie

2. Far too afraid to talk about how brainwashed everyone around them is

or 3. Wanting to move on as soon as possible, as they're either afraid of how brainwashed everyone is or just sick and tired of it

Personally, I'd rather work elsewhere for more money. Nothing in capitalism is so great and worthy that I should sell myself out on it so completely and earn less than what is industry standard.

As for the comparisons above, you guys really need to get a grip on reality. There's a BIG difference between your idealistic personal opinion and they way it all actually works, which is probably too complex for a comments section, and rooted more in percieved value than any of us are ready to admit.

We live in a society where sales and profits designate salary.

If thats the case UPS owes me a lot of money considering how much I make as opposed to how much profit they earn.

Maybe its time for a software engineer's guild.

Apple software engineers making less, cmon guys they should make at least minimum wage $7.50 to $8.00 per hour. Stop complaining about your freakin' income at least you got a JOB. They're software makers they're not here to make heart defribrilator or x-ray scanners that can save lives or even save the environment like fuel efficient engines. About Microsoft, Yahoo, & Google they're numbskulls coz they pay these guys a fortune and sooner or later there stocks will come tumbling down coz people don't need websites or search engines. People need basic necessities like FOOD, SHELTER & CLOTHING like the rest of the world. Rather than these companies help the world they rather pay guys to make there products that would be completely useless when it comes to survival or at least help the troubled or tragic victims of katrina, tsunami & earthquake disasters. Including the California fires that left thousands homeless. Some of us make at least above minimum wage and never complain coz we appreciate what we get. -MuthaF***ka in Da House

I agree with. Unfortunately this wild capitalism is one of the worst thing of modern society. Money does not bring happines. See the US as the #1 country with stressed people. Switzerland with suicides etc.

Ok, the person who typed the last comment is clearly missing the point. We live in a society where sales and profits designate salary. Thus, proffesional sports stars make millions of dollars. If Microsoft and other software companies pay its engenieers that much more, they will attract the talent. Simple economics. Brand loyalty can only get you so much. However, we also dont know what kind of benefit package apple engeneers are getting. But come on...
