Apple Addresses iMac Lockup Problems

Earlier today, we reported in our daily news roundup that owners of 24-inch iMacs were having screen lockup problems. Apple is aware of the problem, and according to an Apple representative, the company is working on a fix.
"A small number of iMac users have made us aware that a recent software update issued by Apple can sometimes cause their iMacs to freeze, requiring them to restart their iMac," the Apple spokesperson said in a statement to Mac|Life. "We are tracking down the root cause of this bug, and will issue a software update which corrects it as soon as we can–most likely later this month. We apologize for the inconvenience."
The screen lockup problem affects iMacs that have installed the iMac Software Update 1.1 that was released on September 13. According to Apple's Web site, the update "provides important bug fixes."

First adopter iPhone users got 200 hundred bucks for their patronage, What do first adopter iMac users get? Promises of a fix in the in determinant future? Lame apologies for the inconveniences? How 'bout feelings of regret and remorse? Ease my pain, Steve, send me a couple hundred dollars so I can drink my sadness away? Thanks, man.

Just bought a 20-inch iMac for my kids, and the computer started to freezes when they play games, specially the new Harry Potter. I read in other forums that people who plays UT2004 are having the same problem. So maybe apps that uses a lot the video card will produce the crash.

This is interesting. However, I've experienced problems like this on my Windows machines. Yeah I'm a Windows user, I own only Windows computers, that doesn't mean I like Windows though. It's gotta be the firmware/driver(s) doing this. I find it very unlikely that it could be anything else. Of course it could be the setting of the games in question. I'm confidant Apple Inc. will get things fixed. If they can't I'm sure they'll go after ATI for something or other. Which would suit me just find I don't care for ATI graphics cards.
Either way. It's a major problem. I ordered an iMac and I fully intend on playing Need for Speed Carbon on it. I hope they get these problems resolved by the time my iMac arrives. I'm into multimedia big time and I don't want to have to worry about Photoshop or Premiere causing problems with a bran new iMac.
