AT&T Ratchets Up 3G Speed and iTunes Movies Premiere in Canada and Britain

Is it faster now?: Rejoice future 3G iPhone users, 3G download and upload speeds are faster according to AT&T. The mobile operator announced Wednesday a 20 percent increase in download speeds. AT&T claims customers should achieve download speeds between 700 Kbps (kilobits per second) and 1.7 Mbps (megabits per second), up from 600 Kbps to 1.4 Mbps. Upload speeds should reach between 500 Kbps - 1.2 Mbps, up from 500 to 800 Kbps. According to AT&T, the upgrade should be complete in all markets by the end of the month.

Oh, iTunes: Apple has announced iTunes Store customers in Canada and Britain can now rent and purchase movies via the iTunes Store. The Canadian iTunes store has over 1,200 titles for your viewing pleasure. While across the pond, the UK iTunes Store will sell and rent movies, including a limited number of titles in high definition for the Apple TV.

Big in Japan: Apple and Japanese mobile operator, SoftBank have reached an iPhone deal after two years of negotiations. SoftBank will begin selling the iPhone this year. SoftBank is Japan’s third largest mobile provider and with a rapidly growing customer base. Shinko Securities analyst, Tomohiko Okugawa said, the iPhone needs “to offer something new and surprising to be a hit in Japan."

Spanish iPhone Loving: Spain your patience was been reward. Telefonica has signed a deal to be the exclusive iPhone provider in Spain. "The phone should go on sale before the summer," according to an official, fueling speculation that the 3G iPhone will be available following WWDC 08.

“Don't go changing, to try and please me…”: Brian Caulfield, senior technology writer at Forbes.com, says “that fixing the iPhone's flaws could be deadly.” iPhone designers need to the keep the improvements “numbingly geeky,” and stick to the mantra “this is not a phone, this is a new generation of communications device.”

Not an iPhone rumor: TUAW.com is reporting that Steve Jobs will debut Mac OS x10.6 at the WWDC 08. Finally, a rumor that's not about the iPhone. Unless features found in OS X 10.6 are needed for the rumored 3G iPhone.

Haha I love how on the Apple Canada site under the overview on the iPod + iTunes page there is mention of the iPhone. "Buy music on the go. Download music from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store on your iPod touch or iPhone." Sooo excited for the iPhone to finally be in Canada, hope it comes in the next few weeks!

$19.99 Canadian for a movie purchase? WTF? I can go to Future Shop and buy the DVD for $2 more, get a hardcopy AND the 2 disc set.

I think Apple is a weeeee bit out of line on their Canadian movie prices...

I for one am quite happy to see movie rentals and purchases through iTunes finally. Did anyone expect it to be super cheap? if so, you need to climb out of your basement and face reality once in awhile and stop trolling forums.
Bell Canada Launched their own Video Rental and purchase store last week, but does not allow for Macintosh users or iPod integration of any kind. I warned them iTunes would come and kill them, and Apple heard my begging and came full force.

Never having bought anything from iTunes before, it took me all of 30 seconds to rent and begin the first downloaded rental. And less than 8 minutes it was done and ready for my viewing pleasure.
Just make sure you have updated both iTunes and Quicktime to the latest, or no movies for you.

Kudos Apple! Keep 'em comin'!

I am crazy about the new iphone. I love it. I can't wait. With that said, and this may not be recieved well by this website, the LG Vu has closed the gap. I agree with SoftBank in which the new iphone better be ground breaking otherwise the competition has caught up and there's no reason to go crazy over a new design with old features.
