AT&T Has New Revenue Scheme – To Fleece Suckers
Color us unimpressed. While supposedly AT&T has been dumping money into their 3G network to boost its capabilities (are you guys working on 4G yet?), it's still hard to get a signal inside many buildings. While it's more than you need to know, let's just say that some of us can't even get a signal in our own bathrooms.
Yeah, it's that bad. And that's why AT&T's announced 3G MicroCells don't really excite us.
According to Ma Bell's press release this femtocell is "an innovative solution that allows residential customers to route wireless phone calls and data connections (or sessions) across a home broadband connection." In other words, AT&T wants to put up a tiny 3G tower in your home in order use your broadband connection to fix their spotty coverage. And they want you to pay for it.
Whaaaat?
It gets better. They explain up top that this "innovative solution" is very helpful for those whose "dense wall and roof construction" prevent them from getting optimal 3G coverage. And then we're told in the fine print at the bottom: "maximum coverage of the AT&T 3G Micro Cell™ is approximately 5000 square feet. Actual coverage will be limited by the density of obstructions." So if you have the thick walls of the kind limiting your 3G in the first place, this "innovative solution" will do you no good whatsoever.
And how much does the Death Star of phone companies want to charge you for this lovely, possibly worthless "innovative solution"? Once again, the press release: "AT&T 3G MicroCell is available for a one-time cost of $149.99." Wow. So for $150 I can fix your problems? Thanks, AT&T.
But since they figure people might balk, the sweetener comes in with this line: "Consumers who select 3G MicroCell calling plans at purchase are also eligible to receive a $100 mail-in-rebate." Aww, thanks bunches. We give you $150 bucks to fix your problem and you refund us $100 of that in the form of a credit card good for 120 days. And it even goes on to say that if we pick up AT&T's broadband service when we buy our Microcell, they'll kick in another $50 refund.
But wait, let's revisit something up above. "Consumers who select 3G MicroCell calling plans." Wait, wait. We have to buy something else from AT&T to get this $100 refund. How much do the calling plans cost for this "innovative solution"?
"For $19.99 a month, individual or Family Talk customers can make unlimited calls through a 3G MicroCell" reads the press release.
Excuse us while we repeat ourselves.
Whaaaaaaaat?
Let's get this straight. AT&T has crappy 3G coverage in lots of places. Many customers can't get coverage inside their own homes. So AT&T, instead of fixing the coverage issues, decides to sell a device for $150 (which may or may not work inside your home) that will either eat up your minutes or you have the option of dropping an additional 20 bucks a month to have unlimited use the network you're already paying for. Is that about the long and short of it? And to get the refund, they essentially comp you five months of this unlimited calling on your own service.
Wow. That's just...words fail us. "Innovative" is one way to describe it, much in the same way that the first bank robber was forging a bold new innovation in cash acquisitions.
Will Smith got pretty much the same take as we did here. Once again, FAIL, AT&T, FAIL.

Hi there. I'm fairly new to this site. I'm loving the community here, so I want to contribute to everyone this article I read that really changed my life financially. Last week I got a check for $900! Really, no joke, I thought I couldn't do it myself, but I did. And it really helped me out my family financially because i'm a stay at home mom.hopefully it works out for you too. Good luck and God bless!
Craps “strategy”: If you are new, this might sound like gibberish. I bet on the pass line and then do Come bets until I’m typically on three numbers. It’s considered very unusual. Most people will tell you to take the odds and I can’t mathematically argue against that except that I like to be on spread on a few numbers to increase my chances of hitting one.
The reason I use the Come bet instead of the 6 and 8 like most people do, is to hedge against a 7 getting rolled once the point is established. If that happens right away, I often break even and “live another day.” This strategy can keep you playing for a while without having to start with a huge bankroll (necessary for putting odds on a lot of numbers.Computer Jobs

I read the comment by the "disappointed" MacLife fan regarding the validity of the article.
Well and good my friends! It STILL doesn't negate the fact that AT&T are one of the TOP Corporate PIGS
in ALL of "free enterprise" world!

Well lets talk about the truth "The quality" of AT&T product as a whole. Let just say that irrespective of the quality of the article the truth is the undeniable i.e AT&T truly Sucks as a Company and as a service provider. How do I know this well gents unfortunately my family and I work/worked for them and perhaps am more privy to the truth than most consumers. The fact is that AT& T has no other ambition than to make a nice return on its Investment.
It really doesn't care about quality. They invest heavily in advertising and marketing campaigns by bombarding the public and creating a false illusion of quality. AT&T views its customers and its employees simply as a number that contributes to its Balance sheet. It will continue to develop and invest on schemes and mechanisms that will siphon more money from its consumers rather than investing in its employees and product.
Just ask anyone of its many employees working in its Call Centers in its Network Operations, Maintenance Centers Managers, Technicians, etc. Just dont ask them while they are working. I guess I'll wait for the AT&T lurkers to respond.

As to your question, your interior walls do play a part but are you saying that the microcell would not work in your house? Have you tried it? Oh no, that's right, you prefer to go with conjecture as opposed to objective facts and tests.
Also, I noticed that you did not respond to my point about other carriers having the same type of issues. There are too many factors involved in what makes a cell signal available in a certain area to put the wholesale blame on AT&T as you did.
Kudos though for following up your juvenile column with a juvenile title for your response. Are you 14 or are you an adult journalist? That's all we're wondering.

at least i'm glad to see that none of you are spammers. total win. and for the record, i live in an older home with plaster walls and find coverage different in different locations throughout the house. are you telling me my home's exterior walls are differing thicknesses in different places or could it be the interior walls are playing a role in affecting my coverage?

All I have to say is WTF!?! I don't have that problem here. However, Fido does every so often shut off it's towers and turn them back on again an hour later. I'd probably shoot myself if Fido told me that for $150 you can have an item that covers you during our downtimes.

I concur that this was a pretty lame article with very little meat to it. As a person who owns and iPhone and lives in a rural area we we don't have any coverage at all, the prospect of being able to use my iPhone at home via microcell is great! Would I like AT&T to actually provide decent coverage to this rural corner of Vermont? Sure, but I'm not holding my breath on that count. $150 is a small price to pay to actually take advantage of the $72/month I'm paying now for monthly use. You should see my rollover minutes count! I got 'em to burn!
Now I just wonder how long it will take AT&T to actually make the unit available in my area...

I agree wholeheartedly with "frankly". This is a poor excuse for an article, and contains very few facts. If I wanted whining and complaining and multiple statements like "Whaaaaaaat?", I'd go read it in a high school forum.

March 25, 2010 at 8:49am
Am I reading an official Mac|Life article or is this something that leaked out of one of the forums? This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever read on this website. It is so lacking of facts and so full of hyperbole that you literally sound like some lame forum poster just bitching about AT&T. Let's look at the facts shall we?
1) AT&T is not the only provider to offer this type of solution. Verizon and Sprint offer similar devices.
2) Lack of coverage inside of buildings is a problem for EVERY carrier in different locations. I have either had or have friends that have every major carrier and when you are in different people's homes you will find that because of the distance of the tower, tree coverage, and building construction at least one of the carriers will not work in the home. My house is an AT&T dead zone but my friend's Verizon phone works great in it. That same friend's house has horrible Verizon coverage but I get five bars on my AT&T phone.
3) Most people spend a significant amount of time at home. A lot of people live in the suburbs. If you think that AT&T or any carrier's priority is to boost up coverage in suburbs so that people can get signals inside of their homes then you are delusional at best.
4) It is EXTREMELY disappointing that you would post this ridiculous "review" when you haven't even used the device.
5) I have one installed in my house and I went from having 1 bar on a good day to having 5 bars all the time. I have a 2900 square foot house on a half acre of property and the microcell covers the entire house and both my front and back yards.
6) If you invest the $150 to purchase one of these you can effectively make that back within a few months by getting rid of your home phone. And if you go for the rebates and pay the monthly fee you can get unlimited phone calls for every AT&T cell phone in your house for a very low rate. This would allow you to lower your monthly minute plan as well. Since you get unlimited calls in your house you would not need as many minutes and you could easily make it a wash on the monthly fee.
7) When AT&T is talking about dense wall and roof construction messing up signals they are most likely referring to your exterior walls. The microcell will have no problem going through your internal walls.
I'll finish by saying that I am very disappointed in Mac|Life for allowing this pissant article to be published on their site. I have been a Mac|Life (and MacAddict) subscriber for years and years. This is unbecoming of the quality magazine that I am normally a huge fan of. J Keirn-Swanson does a disservice to the great editorial staff of Mac|Life.

Yea, I don't like the fact that I actually just paid 200 bucks out of pocket for 3G in my home BUT my iPhone works and I can actually answer it in my house now instead of my messages going to my answering service which was costing me over 200 bucks per month anyway.
So for me, I am actually "saving" money kicking off that additional expense AND I already have unlimited coverage so no additional 19.95 per month was applied.
The iPhone is so useful that I cannot be without it and the spotty coverage is getting better. ATT just placed an additional 30+ cell towers in Scottsdale, AZ alone and I have seen improvement. I have also been using their coverage application to send them info on areas that reception is weak or non-existent.
So, just that fact that I can answer the phone with this kind of signal strength is refreshing.
On the other side of the coin, with Apple's relationship and ATT, I say Apple, not ATT should be stepping up to the plate with funds enough to provide better coverage for their devices instead of the other way around. OR, they just need to make the move to Verizon. They have enormous resources available at Apple and not to improve coverage for things they keep producing and trying to sell us is ridiculous. The iPad 3G is a great example of which I have one on order.

You have to give AT&T some credit; they are second only to members of Congress in their ability to fail to deliver on any promise, while looking you in the eye AND putting their hands in your pockets; at the same time. You article is great and I hope is widely read. AT&T fails to deliver a viable product (for many parts of the country) then asks us to pay them to fix it. There is a special place in hell for their management team.
