I'm sure hoping they don't mean that because I'm planning on upgrading both my iPhone 3g and my wife's. I'm going to keep one of my 3g's though for development and for a backup unit in case the new ones have any problems.

I think what they are saying is you are not currently eligible for an upgrade, so they will give you a discounted iPhone with a higher price tag than if you were eligible for an upgrade. The date on the full discount is when you will be eligible for an upgrade, and no longer charged for the higher price on the discount. Terrible wording really.

I am a sales rep for AT&T, let me help you understand what you’re looking at. You will be eligible for the FULL discount at the 18 month mark of tour contract. Being 1 year in to your contract, AT&T (and Apple) will sell you a 8Gb IPhone for $399 and a 16GB iPhone for $499. Once you reach the 18 month mark of your contract, you will be eligible for a standard upgrade witch is the $199/$299 pricing.

If you ever wondered, or cared (probably not) why phone companies are considered the crotch scab of the business world, read aloud that gibberish you just wrote.

If a phone company ever comes along that actually values its customers and will treat their users with respect, it will completely destroy all the competition. Especially convoluted corporate knobs that put their abstract business plans at a premium over common sense.

Well, It’s not really that hard to understand. The Iphone cost $599 for an 8GB and $699 for a 16GB. When you sign a 2 year contract, we give you a MAJOR discount on the phone bringing the price down to $199/$299 for the 8GB and 16GB respectively. At that point we make up the $400 difference in your bill. This is also the reason that the Iphone is the ONLY phone that we require a data package on. All of our other phones only have a $150 discount for singing a 2year contract. For example, a blackberry bold is $549 with out a 2 year contract, with the 2 year contract we will sell it to you for $399. So in general, if you want another phone before you’re eligible for an upgrade, its going to cost you more because we haven’t recouped the discount we gave you on your last phone. So if you break or lose your Iphone you can’t just come in and buy another one for $199/$299.

If you don’t like the way we so it here in the states, maybe you would prefer it the way it’s done in the rest of the world where you don’t need a contract and your phone is unlocked to any network, the only catch is your going to pay full price for your Iphone in this case $599/$699. But in America we have become Spoiled and have a sense of entitlement I love when people come in and say I’m “ENTITLED “ to a free upgrade…

That's not what I was told the other day.

A few days ago, I went into a corporate store to upgrade one of my lines to a iPhone 3G. I am 22 months into the contract on the one line in particular. I was quoted a price of $499 for a 16GB new. I was also told to come back in two months, when my contract was up for that line, to qualify for the "full, reduced, upgrade price of $299."

Although, I could have had any other phone in the store for an upgrade reduced price. How does that work?

At 22 months you should be eligible for an upgrade on that line. Under no circumstance are you required to wait a full 2 years to upgrade your line with a full discount on an iPhone. Also the 16GB is $599 for an early upgrade not $499. so something is incorrect here. You’re leaving something out or miss understood the Rep…

I think that anyone who bought an iPhone within the first 60 days or so after its release should automatically be eligible for the lowest price on new iPhone hardware. These people are the early adopters, and it's in AT&T's best interest to keep them happy so they will continue to be early adopters and evangelists for the technology. AT&T could even put a window on that, say, you get the full discount on the new model within the first 60 days of its release. Why wouldn't AT&T want people to trade up, especially the True Believers who were in line on day 1? The "policies" as outlined above just aren't clear enough, unfortunately.

I understood her completely

No, she told me $499, as that was the....how did she say it......discounted early upgrade price for the iPhone. It is the same price I was quoted online at the premier website. I checked there to be sure she didn't tell me the wrong thing.

Also, like I said, she flat out told me that I could choose any other phone in the store and get the full upgrade discount on it, just not the iPhone. The manager was standing right next to her, when she said it, and he didn't appear to disagree.
