I mean “quel dommage,” not “quell the damage.”
We’re hoping accented alphabets will come to the iPhone in a future update, but for now, no, we don’t know of a way to type accented letters. Nor can you disable the spelling checker.
But you can outsmart it and teach it your vocabulary so eventually it’ll predict your words instead of the default.
Next time you type a word that the iPhone’s spelling gremlin pops its little word-suggestion bubble over, tap the suggestion to dismiss it (that’s intuitive...).
Now to reeducate the dictionary, type the same word again, and tap the suggestion again. The next time you start to type that word, the iPhone should happily offer to autocomplete it for you. And you should happily provide this feedback to Apple - the company has a Web page (www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html) for just this type of thing.
