Last week in Free App Friday, we took a look at Fix-It Felix Jr., a movie tie-in app for the celebration of retro gaming taking place in Wreck-It Ralph. However, if I were going to be completely honest, as fun as Fix-It was, that was a representation of a bygone era even by the time I first held up an NES controller. This week we celebrate a free app that harkens to a time that thumbs were blistered, giant robots and monsters were slain, and the guns were entirely unrealistic and awesome.
In Random Heroes, a freemium title by League of Evil developer Ravenous Games, you are called upon to fight off zombie mutant robots with a simple blaster, not unlike Mega Man, Contra, Metal Slug, or many others in the past. The action is familiar, but the mechanics are solid, with all mistakes being made by the player, rather than the virtual pad. Additionally, for a freemium title, the in-game purchases can be bypassed with a little bit of time investment coupled with a desire for a more old-school challenge, so there's little to lose!
