@MaclifeUK: if it can be typed into Terminal.app it can be scripted.

If you Open the Trash bin, then click on "Finder" in the upper left, there is an option to "Secure Empty Trash". This writes random zeroes and ones to the old files areas. It may not be as thorough as the 7-pass or 35-pass options described, but for most uses it should do the trick. And you cannot type an incorrect command and screw everything up.
