The 10 Coolest Things We Saw at the MythBusters Studio
Posted 07/08/2009 at 5:55:13pm | by Leslie Ayers

Imagine how stoked we were to find out that Adam Savage, co-host with Jamie Hyneman of MythBusters on The Discovery Channel, is a longtime and quite dedicated Mac user.

One thing led to another, and with the help of the amazing PR team at Discovery, we got in touch with Savage, set up a phone interview, and arranged a photo shoot at M5 Industries in the Potrereo Hill neighborhood of San Francisco, where the show keeps its offices and machine shop ,and does quite a bit of filming when they're not shooting outdoors in the SF Bay Area or on location elsewhere. Our profile of Savage will run in the September 2009 issue of Mac|Life (Out on newsstands and in subscribers' mailboxes by mid-August), but rather than make you wait 5 whole weeks, we thought we'd throw you a bone -- and take the opportunity to gloat a little -- about the awesome geekfest that is M5.

We were prepared to be awestruck by the chance to get up close and personal with recognizable MythBusters artifacts. But since the M5 building, which belongs to Hyneman, also serves as the show's office and a place for Hyneman to keep his sizable collection of flotsam and jetsam from past projects throughout his illustrious career in special effects and model building and as the principle of M5, we got so much more than we bargained for in the awe department.

Without further ado, in order of coolness, the top 10 things we got to see and touch and photograph:

1. Adam Savage's lightsabers

There's nothing geeks of all stripes like more than Star Wars, right? But we had no idea how cool lightsabers were in person. Savage was kind enough to bring a dozen or so from his personal collection to the photo shoot, so of course we had to handle them with the deference required, which, after we snapped the obligatory photos, meant pretending to do battle with them, Luke vs. Vader style (see video, below, shot with zero filmmaking skill by Leslie on her iPhone 3GS).

We were surprised at how heavy these lightsabers were. Savage explained that the shaft is modeled from after a 3-cell Graflex flashgun because George Lucas wanted the swords to look "less like toys and more like tools."

2. Creature from Naked Lunch

was hanging waay up high near the ceiling of the shop, but Robbie still couldn't look at him without cringing.

3. Robots, robots, robots!

Nothing establishes geek cred like lots of robots, and there's no shortage of them at M5.

Aw, it's so cute we could hug it.

Just try to get past This li'l sawblade-for-a-hand guy, who stands sentry at the top of the stairs that lead to the MythBusters office and other upper rooms, including the "Crazy Room," shown below. Pop Quiz: What magazine did Leslie find in the upstairs restroom at M5? Answer: Popular Mechanics, natch.

If anyone ever tried dusting this solar-powered robot, he might just try to make a break for it at the first hint of sunlight.

avatarOne big thing they seem to be missing:

Someone familiar with The Scientific Method.

Their science really sucks. It's often very entertaining, but it's facile at best, dangerous at worst. Two quick examples:
They tested gas mileage with AC vs open windows. By using two vehicles. Not one truck with the windows open, then closed with the AC on, but one truck with the windows open, and a completely different truck with the windows closed. Maybe the two vehicles had different mileage to begin with?

Shooting bullets into water - they should be arrested for this one. The biggest fault was using a monstrously high-powered rifle about 6 feet from the water. When the molten slug hit the water at about 3,000 mph it disintegrated. Duh! If they backed up about 30 feet and did it again, the bullet would have cooled and entered the water, skicing through it and the ballistic gel like a Ginsu through a tomato. But their verdict was that a pistol was more dangerous to someone in the water than a huge rifle.

If they want to say, "Watch this, It's cool!" I'm all for it. But to present this as anything other than superficial trash science is just a lie.

avatarSo go to their discovery.com

So go to their discovery.com forums, and post this.  They may revisit the myth.  Though iirc, just about every calier bullet stopped within six inches of the surface.  It's entirely possible that this slug would to.

imajoebob: It's just a TV show. Sometimes it's just cool to watch them blow stuff up and stop worrying about the science.

avatarI understand

It is nice and funny to see the things they do, but there are some instances when they don't necessarily seem to try everything.  For example: The episode where some gangster or mob boss had a gun go off in his car because of a loud stereo.  The system they put together was very poorly built, and I was a little upset by how excited they were to see 130dbs because they had already done a car audio myth where they did 164 and got to experience professional competitors and their setups.  Not to mention, they borrowed the MTX escalade and just set the guns down inside of it with no protection what-so-ever for the vehicle in the event the guns did go off, it was like K T G didn't care about the myth they were testing.  There are two guys out there who have done 180-181 db inside of their car, and many who can do 155-170.  The MTX truck they used didn't do more that mid 140db it seemed.  I was disappointed with all of the flaws in that myth.  None of the subwoofers they used for the testing were even remotely near a top level subwoofer.  It didn't seem like they cared when they did that myth.

avatarwindows-down-vs.-air-conditioning

Car and Driver did the windows-down-vs.-air-conditioning test too (Dec. 2008), with one car driven at at a steady 35, 55, and 75 mph.  Windows down lowered mpg by 1.5%, 3.3%, and 2.0% respectively, while the A/C reduced mpg by 15.3%, 9.3%, and 6.8% respectively.  Higher engine revs at highway speeds increased the engine's ability to run the A/C compressor efficiently, accounting for the better A/C-on mileage at high speeds vs. low speed.  They were surpised by the results too.
