I had this problem constantly when I had my Airport Express configured to extend my wireless network. The problem went away when configured it as just a regular wireless client instead of a remote base station.

This section needs a big disclaimer: games that require a CD/DVD to be inserted to play usually aren't fooled by the method you suggest, i.e. creating and mounting disc image. I have heard that using Roxio Toast to mount an image does work for most games though.

This isn't a comprehensive solution, but I use a handy free preference pane called AppTrap (http://onnati.net/apptrap/). Whenever you move an application to the trash it automatically offers to trash that application's preferences as well. I don't think it looks for anything besides preferences, but at least it keeps your preferences folder from growing out of control.
