69 Awesomely Free Snow Leopard Compatible Apps
|
The word free gets thrown around quite a lot lately. Cell phone carriers offer "free" phones that are tethered to a two-year contract. Those free rooms in Vegas come at the price of three hours of your life spent listening to a time share pitch. Even Steve Jobs said the new camera in the iPod nano was free. If you're still paying money, it's probably not free.
To help get free back to its rightful place of, well free, we've compiled a list of apps and services that are indeed free and won't require you to sit through a pitch about how great it is to be a foster parent to a monkey. We do want to note that some of these items are services or system preferences. But hey, they're free, so stop complaining and enjoy.
We would also like to note that some of these apps are donationware. If you find that an app you find here is the greatest thing ever and you plan on using it all the time, consider donating some money to the developer. They'll appreciate being able to buy food for the monkeys they're currently playing parent too.

Adium - Talk to anyone
The go to chat app on Macs for years. Connects to AIM, Yahoo, MSN, Jabber, Facebook, ICQ, Bon Jour, Google Talk and more. If there's a chat, chances are, Adium can handle it.
Alarm Clock - WAKE UP!
Versatile alarm clock app can wake you up to your iTunes music, and even wake up your computer first if it happens to be sleeping. Supports the Apple Remote for snoozing.
Anxiety - So much to do
Lightweight to-do list that syncs with iCal and Mail.
AppCleaner - Clean your virtual room
A small application that helps truly delete applications when you move them to the trash.
Audacity - Sound off
Cross-platform audio editor.
Bean - You want how many words by when?
Word processor with live word count, autosaving, and other features.
Boxee - Reply to emails or watch It's Always Sunny in Philedephia?
Turn your Mac into a multimedia powerhouse with this free open source app. Hulu may have put the kibosh on Boxee support, but the media player still rules the TV.
Burn - Burn it all!
Burn CDs and DVDs of just about anything: music, data, DMGs, etc.
Carbon Copy Cloner - Making copies.
Create a clone of your drive ready for installation on another drive. A great backup tool for those that value their data.
CyberDuck - Ducktales, wooohooo.
Robust FTP client with plenty of cool features. Plus, how can you deny the cute factor of a duck controlling your data transfers. Utility
doubleTwist - Sync your Palm Pre.
Sync your random non-iPod device to your iTunes library. Oh, did we mention you can buy music from Amazon.com from within the app?
Dropbox - Files to go.
Your files, anywhere you need them. Sync, backup and store your data with Dropbox.

Fun application. I have some use for it. Like to toy around with it, but not paying for it. Annoying pop up to get me to buy it has caused me to uninstall it.
TO THE DEVELOPERS OF iSTAT: Annoying people is NO way to get them to spend $. I think those of us who have it for free should have an option to cancel the pop ups. Oh well, no $ for you, no good word of mouth. Your tactics are poor.

I just took out a great Payday Loan with the intention of upgrading to a new mac, I can’t wait to use snow leopard and try out all these fantastic apps I’ve ever been able to use before. CyberDuck looks like a lot of fun.

So you’re looking for a great pair of Frye Boots, but don’t have the budget to buy them at your traditional brick and mortar store? No worries. We have done the hard work for you and identified plenty of suppliers that sell the type of FRYE boots that you need to be fashionable and comfortable at the same time.

Hi: I really like this site, now that i straigtened out my identity and password (you have no idea how many 3 x 5 cards i have stashed away to keep track of all the places i visit and then forget). I should be like a genius i know who says he has used the same password for everything for 30+ years, and would have to kill me if he told me what it was:).
Anyway, though not free, the one application that i wish could be brought back for SnowLeopard is WINDOWSHADE, or something equivalent. I really miss being able to double click the title bar and having the rest of the window suck up into it; or the other ability to click the minimize (center) button and having a little window appear on the screen like a mini-dock. My last visit to their site indicated that they had kind of given up on
Leopard.I know Expose is supposed to kindof duplicate that ability, but I have not found it as convenient or straightforward to use.
Regards: Thanks for a great site and magazine.

Great article! But iCompta was not included which is a personal finance app that never gets the attention it deserves

It should be noted that the free version of SuperDuper! is not fully featured. To get the fully featured version costs $28.
Also, where is iStatMenus? Glaring omission from any freeware application list in my opinion and version 2.0 is SL compliant and more robust than the 1.X version were.
Overall the article is great, though and I definitely found a few things to download.

Some apps I find useful, some useless and I am certain others will find my useful apps useless and visa versa. I REALLY find this article useful and time saving. I don't have all day to scour the internet looking for cool and useful apps to make my work quicker or more enjoyable. Quick Silver was missing, one of the greatest apps for the Mac of all time.
Please keep up the good work.

THIS is what I would like to see in the MAGAZINE too! Useful, helpful, free, almost free apps that normal, everyday people who are NOT computer experts can use. How I miss the format and NAME MacAddict! I even liked the paper better. I STILL cannot get used to Mac|Life! This was one of the MOST USEFUL e-mails I have EVER received! Now, if SOMEONE could just invent an app that would make my "old" HP DeskJet 990cm printer print double-sided again AND 4x6 BORDERLESS pics like I USED to be able to do under Leopard, but has DISAPPEARED with Snow Leopard, I would be thrilled! HP (the "GREEN" company) won't support it any longer and says toss it and buy new and Apple obviously deleted something that makes my printer just about useless!

Darn you folks at MacLife. I've had a long day ... and now come home to this great article. There's at least five or six apps I simply MUST try out - right now.
Keep up the excellent work. I can sleep later.

I was smugly running through the list thinking "Got it, got it, don't need it, got it", I was beginning to think there was nothing new and then there it was. Solitaire! Since PySol has died under SL, it was the one little gap in my apps arsenal. So thank you. My weekend will be wasted away now.......
