Another installment of "In Case You Missed It" because let's face it, the last week has been madness. Driving anywhere in town took twice as long, there were lines everywhere stretching around the block, even at ice cream stores in Alaska, and people kept coming over to visit or asking you to come to their parties. We'd be surprised if you had time to update your Facebook status even.
So join us in taking a gander at some of the hottest stories of the week.
Features:
- Setting Up Your New Mac: The First 25 Things You Need To Do - Because the holiday season is a time for new computers, including former Windows users finally turning away from the Dark Side of the Force, we've created a trio of helpful set up guides for noobs. This one is for the MacDaddy of Apple products, your basic Mac.
- Setting Up Your New iPod: The First 25 Things You Need To Do - iPods aren't just for music anymore. Game player, temporary portable hard drive, and (for iPod touch users) pocket computer, here's tons of tips and tricks and apps to get you started.
- Setting Up Your New iPhone: The First 25 Things You Need To Do - Our personal favorite, going beyond even the desktops and laptops, the sweet, sweet beloved iPhone. If you're among the growing number of users who are done with all the toy cellphones out there, here's just a tidbit of the things you'll discover.
How-Tos:
- Create a Cheap Server Using the Regular Snow Leopard Install - Now that the noobs are squared away, here's a little something meatier for Mac pros. Since it's new computer season, don't let that old Intel Mac end up in a landfill or at your grandma's house. Instead, get some server goodness out of the old machine with this tricky set up using your Snow Leopard installation disc. Warning: seriously detailed instructions follow.
Reviews:
- Catan - Strategy board games don't come more elegant than Settlers of Catan, the game night fave at nerd homes everywhere. On the cusp of turning fifteen, Catan goes to the iPhone, but the results are mixed. Here's to hoping for a chunky update to the app in the relative near future.
- Chuck Norris: Bring On the Pain - If you expect us to make a Chuck Norris is so tough joke here, well, you've come to the wrong place. On the other hand, the maker Ludigames brings the ludicrousness of Chuck to your pocket where you can kick Commie butt and attack attack attack.
- Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor - Who doesn't love cuddly little cutesy spiders? Wait, scratch that. Even if you don't really care for our creepy crawly little friends, chances are you'll be drawn into this beautifully drawn game's mystery.
- Latest Opera Build Scores Turbo-Fast - Opera's just about no one's favorite browser, but fans of speed might just have their faces melted off with the latest build out of Opera labs. This little browser that could is smoking the competition. All of them.
News:
Do we really have to talk about AT&T? Oh, fine, all right. Whatever. After putting his foot in his mouth AT&T Mobility President Ralph de la Vega had to again walk back statements that suggested tiered pricing was coming to iPhone users. I guess it couldn't have had anything to do with Gizmodo's nailing the carrier on how much the iPhone has profited the company and how Scroogey they've been with rolling out improvements to their world-of-suck 3G network could it now?
Now that we've all settled down from the holidays, Tablet tumors can begin warming our insides again. That's right, there's an Apple Tablet made by Apple and it's coming out. Boy Genius Report and 9to5Mac are doubling down on anonymous sources and schedules to make us all believe once more. Could a new patent revelation for a touch-pad multi-touch keyboard add fuel to the fire? Sure, why not?
Finally, Apps a Poppin! NORAD had a little Santa tracker goodness for your iPhone to keep the kids in line during those last minute shopping jaunts.... Everyone's favorite note app, Evernote, exploded with a humongous update making everything run just better.... BeenVerified.com puts background checking/stalking into your pocket, where it should be. No, that's not a dirty joke.... Riverturn, one of the developers in the Google Voice kerfluffle, brings GV back to the iPhone as a "weblication," a neat workaround site that mirrors the iPhone interface.... Awww, come on, guys. Nintendo NES emultator makes it to the App Store only to get yanked. Sorry, Mario, your princess is in another castle...and last but not least Tapulous makes big big big money.
