It was the week to fight zombies, the week to jailbreak your iPhone, the week to kick iOS 4 to the curb for 3G owners. Holy cow, it sounds like a week of revolutions, or as things go lately when we're talking Apple, just another week of thrills, chills, and bellyaches. How did the Mac|Life staff handle it all, barricaded in the office, fighting off the brain hungry hordes? Not too shabby, we have to say. Now if you'll excuse us, we have to reload.
Features:
- Changes to the DMCA Could Affect Consumers In a Big Way - There's news that breaks, and then there's news that breaks huge. We would definitely put this story in the latter category. Not only did the lovely, wonderful, saints on earth at the Library of Congress update the sometimes odious DMCA to allow things like legalizing ripping DVDs you own and cracking DRM so blind people can get the most out of ebooks, but they also made jailbreaking your phone 100% a-okay. Who says librarians aren't the coolest?

- iOS Game Time - July 27, 2010 - Our editors seem to have gone gaga for zombies lately, and this week's rather post-apocalyptic iOS Game Time is no exception. Yes, yes, StarCraft II, I hear you saying. Wait, wait, we reply Zombie Infection HD, y'all.
- Photos: Comic Con 2010 Leftovers - And since In Case You Missed It was on hiatus last week, here's a carryover. Unfortunately, we weren't out of town because we were attending Comic Con, but our intrepid and fearless Florence Ion was. She of the comic book character last name went in search of the best San Diego's convention center had to offer -- and she brought back killer photos. Be sure to check them out.
How-Tos:
- How To Downgrade your iPhone 3G to iOS 3.1.3 - The tell in this article is in the first two sentences: "It’s official. Four out of four Mac|Life editors still using the iPhone 3G have said sayonara to iOS 4." While this writer can't quite bear to give up his folders just yet (and holds out hope Apple might ride to the rescue), there's no question that iOS 4 is a ball and chain on the iPhone's normally enjoyable use. Wanna ditch the shackles? As always, we've got you covered.
- 20 Tips and Tricks to Become the Ultimate iPhoto Power User - The more digital cameras there are out there, the more photos you end up with, and the more photos you have, the more important it becomes to have some kind of management system in place. iPhoto is just such a management system, and after you're done reading this article, Power User will just scratch the surface of what you can do with your pics.
Reviews:
- 2.4GHz Mac Mini (Mid 2010) Test Results - One of the best things about having a website to go with your print magazine is all the stuff you didn't have room for. An example, we reviewed the unibody Mac mini in our September issue, but how did it stack up to our older Mac mini? It wasn't apples to apples, but there was a pretty close bet. So, how did the two stack up? Read on, mini fans, and find out.
- Simply Audiobooks Download Club Review - In all the hype about e-books these days, let's not forget that audiobooks were one of the first electronic formats. Audible and iTunes (and your local library) pretty much rule the roost. So can an upstart make it in this market? Not with such a big helping of Le Sauce Weak as Simply Audiobooks has on offer. Seriously, guys? You rip CDs, scratches and all, then let us download dozens and dozens of unnamed tracks? For real?
News:
Remember all that iPhone 4 handwringing and sturm und drang about antennas and how Apple lied lied lied to people? Yeah, apparently no one really cares anymore as 77% of iPhone users say they would buy again; compare that to Android's 20%...which we expect includes all those international customers who are queuing up to get their hands on the coveted handset...South Korea, not so much, which, of course, is kicking up a bit of dust...meanwhile, all you international iPhoners just be glad AT&T's not running the show in your neck of the woods, as upload speeds and connectivity continue to be a big fail...and as long as we're getting more handsets in more hands, go ahead and jailbreak; it may void your warranty, but no one will bust down your door, Apple style...what Apple will bring to your door though is bumper goodness, if you want 'em...and we hear that Best Buy will be learning from Apple and handing out free invisibleSHIELD 4Fix films...so how does the iPhone 4 stack up in performance when compared to previous models? Watch the video and see...wait, was that 3G handset running iOS 4, because we hear that performance on the 3G handset stinks worse than Ballmer's prediction track record; hopefully when Apple looks into this issue they find out what the problems are -- and fixes them...but what about the proximity sensors? Not as big a story as the antenna, but a rumor says a fix is on the way...what's on the way we're really excited about though is the idea of a Mi-Fi case that will turn your iPod touch into a guest network Wi-Fi hub. Score!
Journalists love to talk about killers; the Google killer, the iPhone killer; the Facebook killer. We doubt this will stop any time soon, even with this analyst's right on prediction that iPad killers have a long way to go before even getting within stabbing range, but we can hope...even right-twice-a-year Steve Ballmer isn't quite so sure what to do about the iPad's runaway success...and we hear RIM's hoping to get into the game, just like everyone else; wonder what that will look like...because copying Apple's look and feel will not be going away any time soon, as everyone knows Apple products are designed to be dead sexy...and by dead, we don't mean, your iPad caught on fire because it overheated, though like an app for everything, there's an Apple-related lawsuit for that...and if you're buying one of these for me this Christmas and you want to get it engraved, just remember, there is no period after the "J"... as everyone knows Apple users and iPad owners are totally all about the generosity, despite this survey which claims otherwise...speaking of souls of generosity (cough cough) Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation is looking into setting up a subscription service for owners of tablet computers...not that most publishers are feeling the same kind of iPad love, as the dying print industry and Apple still grapple with what are good terms for a magazine subscription model.
Lastly, all by itself, we present to you our intrepid Comic Con reporter, Florence Ion, zombie style. Just because.
