Dude, Where's My iCar? - iPhone and iPod Integration in Today's Cars
Who wouldn't want their next ride to have Apple inside?
Apple may not be in the automobile biz--yet!--but top car manufacturers have definitely cozied up to Cupertino with a slew of options for the iPod and iPhone. But before you buy, test your dream car and iDevices at the showroom. In the fast lane of cars and technology, your compatibility--like mileage--may vary.
Mini
Today’s Mini S lets you make hands-free iPhone calls over Bluetooth and control USB-connected iPods with radio or steering wheel controls, but upcoming Minis will boast MINI Connected, an in-dash infotainment center powered by your iPhone. (miniusa.com)

Ford
SYNC handles calls over Bluetooth and offers wired control of Apple gear in the Lincoln MKZ and other Ford vehicles. The upcoming MyFord Touch system will let you manage both from a touchscreen. (ford.com)

Toyota
An iPod Interface Kit lets you manage your music from the radio or steering wheel, and the BLU Logic hands-free system offers Bluetooth calls and music streaming in models like the Camry LE. (toyota.com)

Hyundai
Sure, Hyundai includes iPads instead of owner’s manuals with every $50,000-plus Equus sedan. But mere mortals can get Bluetooth calls and iPod support in rides like Elantra and still make rent. (hyundai.com)

Volkswagen
The Media Device Interface in Golfs and other VWs lets you control your iDevice with a touchscreen radio or navigation system. Bluetooth calls and music streaming are also available for your iPhone in select cars. (vw.com)

Subaru
BlueConnect handles Bluetooth calls while a separate Media Hub lets you stream your iPhone’s music, or connect a USB iPod, to your stereo in an Impreza or other Subaru vehicle. (subaru.com)

USB connection out of the Bose system in a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu LTZ works, too. The (usually) part comes from learning the hard way that the BlueAnt Q1 Bluetooth headset with original firmware (that can't be upgraded on a Mac!) broke the connectivity to / from the Bose head. Had to restore the iPhone 4 and forget the BlueAnt Q1, but now all is well. So, pay attention to your Bluetooth headset as a potential cause of any problems you may experience.

BMW has also recently released an app that allows you to lock and unlock your car, turn on the climate control and find your car using google maps. Definitely worth a mention.

I'm surprised BMW wasn't mentioned in this article being one of the first car makers who got fully featured iPhone and iPod integration (with the iPod they started as early as 2005).
I read that in 2011 or the latest 2012 models the iPhone will be even more integrated with the main display showing music playlists and maps.
