Should I get the new Apple TV or get a Mac Mini for my TV instead? Suggestions?

The new ATV looks great, but can I connect a HD to Airport Extreme (via USD) and have ATV stream from it? I need a reason to replace my Mac Mini.

When you choose to stream a video to the Apple TV from an iPad, can you control playback using the Apple TV remote or via the iPad or both? What about when streaming audio from iTunes?

This is the solution I've been holding out for. I have a Macbook Pro and an iPad to purchase content. This is the perfect rental device, and for $99 - it's a steal. I also like the small size, so it can be portable (other rooms in the house, relatives & friends houses, hotels on vacation?). I don't see how people can say this isn't much of a change. I think it's great, maybe not for everyone but I can see the market they were going after. (me!)

I can see having one of these and using it in multiple places around the house depending on the need. At $99 and with Apple's interface, they've made a very affordable and elegant bridge for the media in my home.

Sure its smaller and a different color, but everything else seems the same. I actually like that I can purchase content on my existing AppleTV...now I have to launch iTunes to buy a show? I predict less people will purchase content with this method. I'm with 'mrreet2001', buy the old one while you can!

With the old iTV the computer could be asleep or off and you could look at photos or listen to music. Sounds like that's not possible with this new edition. I was hoping to replace my iPod Classic attached to my home theater system. Disappointing.

In an earlier version of this article, I said "no more power brick." Thanks to the helpful reader who reminded me there was never a power brick on the Apple TV. I must have been confused. It's been corrected above.

Will we get a software update that brings Netflix playback, AirPlay, and TV show rentals to our older Apple TVs? That is what I want to know!

We want to know too. We've reached out to Apple and will update the moment we hear back.

If I had to guess, I would say I doubt it, and users will need the newest hardware to get the new features. But as a loyal Apple TV fangirl, I hope I'm wrong.
