Team Fortress 2
ESRB Rating: Mature
Valve’s brilliant first-person shooter debuted in 2007 and has been steadily updated and expanded since, but only recently did it swap to a free-to-play model, which lets you enjoy the class-based, cartoon-stylized warfare without spending a penny. But if you’re so inclined, you can invest in better weapons, tools, hats, and maps—with items starting at $0.49 apiece—to expand your online blasting experience.

World of Warcraft
ESRB: Teen
This beloved, massively multiplayer online role-playing game has been racking up subscription fees for years, but now it’s playable free of charge—if you don’t mind maxing out at level 20 and dealing with other restrictions. Still, that’s a healthy taste of this addictive affair, and you can still optionally shell out $15 a month to dig deeper into the game and access content from the various expansion packs.

LEGO Universe
ESRB Rating: Everyone 10+
Like World of Warcraft, this kid-friendly, massively multiplayer game based on the colorful plastic blocks can be played free of charge, though you’re limited to certain areas and won’t receive content added down the line. However, opting for the paid $10/month plan unlocks the entire LEGO Universe experience, which lets you build, battle, and interact with friends in a variety of distinct scenarios.

Battlestar Galactica Online

You don’t have to be a die-hard fan of Battlestar Galactica to get into this slick, browser-based sci-fi shooter, which tosses you into deep space dogfights while also featuring prominent show characters to satiate aficionados. While some may get a lot of mileage from the free-to-play approach, advanced players may be tempted to purchase Cubits, which can be exchanged for advanced ships and items.

Quake Live
ESRB Rating: Teen
This browser-based version of id Software’s legendary deathmatch shooter Quake III Arena offers up quite of a bit of brutal combat free of charge, with 12-player battles found across dozens of maps and a handful of play modes. Serious players may opt to spend $2/month for 20+ more maps, clan features, and an extra play mode, or $4/month to also add match creation abilities. Sadly, both are billed yearly.
