You're typical user doesn't need to mess with FileVault, that aspect of the system is far more stressful than you're making it. Simply because it uses the system password at time of set up, not just your system password. And you can only use the recovery key once, then it's no longer any good - as well as the fact that if you do use the recovery key, you only have so much time to grab and move your files before they're reencrypted and can no longer be accessed. A better option is to lock down your computer with your password via Security and Privacy and only encrypt the Time Machine backup.



It seems that you can easily get around all these security settings!!!
