When disaster strikes, you need all the help you can get
As important as it is to back up your data, software is only half the story when it comes to digital disasters. Hardware can go bad, or even get stolen, and there’s no way to keep a backup of a shiny new MacBook Pro. Or is there?
All new or refurbished Macs, iPhones, iPods, and iPads come with 90 days of free technical support and a one-year warranty, but an AppleCare plan extends that to three years for Macs and two years for iOS devices. Plans range from $59 to $249, and the out-of-warranty cost of a single repair can make that investment worthwhile overnight. But don’t feel rushed to decide if AppleCare is right for you. Your device is eligible for the service until the end of its original warranty.

Prey’s web control panel can map your Mac for free.
When thieves make off with your stuff, a little insurance can go a long way. Check with your renter’s, homeowner’s, or business insurance plan—your devices may already be covered. If not, companies like SquareTrade and Safeware offer extended warranties and insurance plans specifically for the gadgets thieves love. And before you take your gear on that next business trip, consider getting travel insurance. Your current insurance provider may have plans available.

Undercover can track your gear and even simulate hardware problems to vex thieves.
For a more high-tech solution, security applications for your Mac can run in the background to provide tracking information and webcam pics of the thief that you can take to the police—just don’t go playing Batman over a pilfered MacBook, okay? Prey (free, preyproject.com) transmits your laptop’s location and much more on command, and paid accounts from $5 (personal) to $399 per month (which covers up to 500 devices) can transmit this data automatically. Undercover ($49, orbicule.com) provides similar peace of mind and can even dim your Mac’s screen to simulate hardware problems, making it less desirable to bad guys (an iOS version is also available). LoJack for Laptops ($39.99 a year, absolute.com) tracks your computer, remotely deletes sensitive files, and offers Premium Edition coverage starting at $59.99 that includes a $1,000 guarantee if your computer isn’t recovered.

Despite the name, Find My iPhone can track and remotely erase all your iOS devices.
When it comes to tracking iOS devices, look no further than Apple’s Find My iPhone (free). Once installed and activated on your devices, you can locate them on a map from another iOS device or Apple’s iCloud web interface. You can even remotely lock or wipe the device to keep your Fruit Ninja scores and other sensitive info from prying eyes.
