In addition to hosted solutions from Skype, you may want to consider a RHUB web conference server.

Brosix is another alternative-- we offer encrypted free and corporate messaging software. It includes text chat, video chat, file transfer, screen sharing, etc. We are available on Windows, Mac, and linux and also have android and iPhone apps.

Very good question. I've not been using it but it seems to support video calls. It's available for Win and Mac. And it supports other protocols like AIM and MSN. Seems like that would be a good option.

Or am I missing something.

Hey, what about iChat? I always thought iChat is a suitable alternative to Skype. Plus, you don't have to pay for iChat. It comes with every Mac.

And if the person you wish to chat with doesn't have a Mac?

Then they use AIM. iChat is not it's own service, it's an AIM client.
