8 iOS Apps for Super Bowl Sunday

The Super Bowl -- still our annual sports fixation after all these years -- is this Sunday, and the match-up between the New England Patriots and New York Giants should be a real barn burner. Like many of you, we anticipate spending the day staring at the TV, ingesting questionable foods and liquids, and waiting for the commercial that'll outdo them all, but a handful of apps on both iPhone and iPad can help improve your Super Bowl experience. Between apps tied into the event, NFL-licensed touch screen games, and a couple other curiosities, we've picked out eight apps to check out in anticipation of Sunday's showdown.

If you're in the vicinity of Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis or simply want to check out the location you'll be seeing on TV come Sunday, the official SB XLVI Guide (Free, Universal) app is dedicated to the big game. Inside, you'll find a list of events around the stadium, traffic information for nearby roads, and a 3D look at the field -- plus a seat finder!

The official NFL '11 (Free, iPhone & iPad versions) app has been updated to include the postseason, which at this point means only the Super Bowl. But you can prep for Sunday's showdown by viewing match-ups and injury information, plus the app includes live scoring and play by play during the game, along with highlights and photos along the way.

Madden NFL 12 ($0.99/iPhone, $2.99/iPad) arrived a little light on features late last summer, but bulked up during the season with the addition of multiplayer and a Touchdown Challenge mode, as well as running game tweaks. It's still a little rough in parts, but at that lowered price on iPhone or iPad, you're getting a pretty solid NFL simulation for very little.

You'll need service through Verizon to use NFL Mobile (Free, Universal), plus a subscription to access the full extent of the app, which offers live TV and audio during the season. Luckily, you can dodge the fees and still make use of the app, thanks to gratis video interviews and other pre-Super Bowl clips that'll get you primed for the showdown.

Here's an oddball offering: NFL Photo Booth (Free, iPhone) lets you decorate new or existing photos on your iPhone with a variety of team jerseys, merchandise, and accessories, plus in-app purchases let you buy licensed player photos to insert into the shots. If your Sunday night's getting rowdy, whip this app out to amp up the silliness for sure.

The official (and probably only) app of NFL field goal kickers, NFL Kicker! ($0.99, iPhone) is an amusing little diversion in which you'll flick the ball through the uprights from various spots on the field with a swipe of your finger. It's like the digital equivalent of paper football, but now your buddy can't move the posts at the last second.

Trash talk and the Super Bowl go hand in hand; but if your pals aren't up for gabbing during the game, hop into PlayUp (Free, iPhone) and stir up a little discussion. Whether you're rooting for the Patriots, the Giants, or just a well-played game regardless, you can share your opinions in PlayUp's curated chat rooms.

Unlike the other games on this list, Gameloft's NFL Pro 2012 (Free, Universal) is available without a price tag, and it offers a simulation experience like that of Madden. But like most free-to-play games, it tosses up roadblocks to slow down your progress unless you spend money on credits. At least you'll get a free taste.
