8 New Ways to Use the Finder

The Mac OS X Finder is the first thing anyone sees when you boot a Mac, and that’s one thing that hasn’t changed since 1984. One thing that has changed, however, is all of the ways we interact with the seemingly simple user interface -- especially after the introduction of Snow Leopard 10.6.
If there’s one area of Mac OS X where Apple has worked hard to innovate, it has to be the Finder -- better known to many as the Desktop, or that area of the operating system we’re in when we’re not in a specific application. It’s no surprise then that the Finder is home to a dizzying array of tips, tricks and secrets -- enough to keep us busy for quite some time and still not find them all, especially with Lion 10.7 just around the corner and sure to introduce a few new ones.
For now, let’s take a look at a handful of Finder tricks that you can add to your daily arsenal -- including a few that you may not have known existed in the first place.

To get Relaunch to appear on the Finder icon in the Dock, I had to hold down Control and Option while clicking on the icon, not Control and Command.

This tip is from a third-party, but it's still great (Lion users should wait until your platform is completely supported). Get TotalFinder. It costs $15, but it adds tabs (extremely useful because you don't have 5 windows, you have tabs), prevents .DS files from being created, and many other features.
