When I browsing gallery of my photos in sideways, I´m dying! The first photo is ok, but all other photos "jumping". Every photo move up or make zoom effect. I have iPhone 4S, but iPhone 5 of my father is OK. Can you help me?

avatar

Michael Simon

I'm not sure what the reason for this is. I can't replicate it on my devices, but maybe one of the commenters below can help. Anyone?

When you click the home button on an iPad and the lock screen lights up there used to be a flower button in the lower right hand corner on the old IOS, it's now replaced with the camera button. When you pressed the flower button before it would keep whatever image you choose on the screen lighten up. How do I do that now with the new IOS?

avatar

Michael Simon

It does seem that the iPad photo frame feature has been removed in iOS 7. Not sure why, but perhaps we'll learn more at the iPad event next month.

I've downloaded 7 on my iiPad but not on the iPhone yet. In Safari, in the bookmarks, there was a very handy "User Guide". It's gone with the new ios7! What's a gal to do?!

Michael, Wonderful article! One question!

I have download twitter and facebook and I am trying to change the notification sound when I get notified by either. I went into sounds and seen the facebook and tweet and I just changed them to what i want, but no matter what it only plays the tritone sound when i get notified. Would like to change this. Do we know how? Thanks!

avatar

Michael Simon

I'm pretty sure the Tweet and Facebook alert sounds are only for posts made through the iOS sharing pane. The sounds for incoming notifications would need to be configured in the app you're using. Not sure what the tritone sound is coming from--maybe Mail or Message?

avatar

Jon Polk

Well when ever i get a tweet or a facebook comment or post from someone else, the default alert sound on my phone is the tri-tone which is the old fashioned tone, I would like to change this and I'm not sure how. :/

avatar

Michael Simon

You still can't change the notification alert sound in iOS 7. That's set by the developer (in this case, Facebook and Twitter).

avatar

Jon Polk

So what are the sound settings set for facebook post and tweet for when I can set them as certain tones?

avatar

Michael Simon

That's for things posted when you use the sharing menu, not incoming messages. Like when you tweet a pic from your photo library, for example.

Hey, I think you have already answered the following question, but cannot seem to find it in this string of comments. I have updated iphone 4, a few apps needed updating, have done this, now there is a tiny blue dot against the ones I have updated and I cannot open them. Your help is much appreciated.

avatar

Michael Simon

The blue dot means that they are new or have been updated. Not sure why you wouldn't be able to open them, though. You might want to restart if it persists (hold down power and home buttons for five seconds).

Hello, before the update I was able to use the 'spotlight search' and look up deleted messages in the search bar. Now since the ios7 update I'm not able to see deleted text messges. Even if you deleted them in your actual messages you were still able to search and see them in the search bar. This was quite convienent LOL. I even made sure that 'messages' were checked in the spotlight search. Did Apple just flat out do away with this feature? Please help!! -Thankyou

avatar

Michael Simon

Yes, you can still search the trash in spotlight search. Make sure Mail is selected as an option (Settings >General > Spotlight Search). If it is, open Mail and click on the Trash to see if any messages are in there. It's possible they weren't downloaded from the server during the update.

Maybe I didn't word it right... I'm talking about text messages. Once you deleted the text message in your messages you could still look then up in the search bar even though it was deleted in your messages. But now once I delete a message in my messages I'm not able to see them in the search bar anymore.

avatar

Michael Simon

Oh. I never even knew you could do that. It doesn't work on my phone either, so I asume it's been axed.

Hello Michael, after the IOS 7 upgrade, my wifes Iphone does not ring when receiving a Facetime Call. If she is paying attention, she can receive the call. Can you help please?

Thanks

avatar

Michael Simon

A couple of possibilities here. The FaceTime ringer is separate from the phone, so check the alerts volume slider in Sounds. Also, make sure the mute switch isn't on.

avatar

newnandawg

Michael, thanks for your reply. Unfortunately neither of those is the fix. Ringer is set at max and it is not on mute.

Mike

avatar

Michael Simon

It might require a restart then. That's often the fix for these quirky problems. Just hold down the power button and home button for about 5 seconds.

I spent the afternoon watching football and learning about ios 7 with your article.
Thank you from Texas

Michael Simon

Awesome!

After the upgrade, I lost all my custom ringtones. They are not in the classic section either.

avatar

Michael Simon

If you sync via iTunes, you should be able to upload them back to your device. Look under the "Tones" tab.

Thanks for the many helpful tips. I don't see one to fix one of the main things that's been bothering me - the photos app insists on zooming in on my images when I scroll through them, causing stuff near the edges to be clipped off. When I hit 'edit' it shows the full image, so I know it can do it. Is there a way of disabling this nuisance zoom?

avatar

Michael Simon

Weird. Mine doesn't do that. Are you using a 4S?

avatar

dave104

IPad 2. Not all photos do this. I wonder if it isn't a slideshow setting but those don't seem to exist anymore.

avatar

Michael Simon

Ah. I haven't actually gotten around to installing iOS 7 on my iPad yet, but I'll be sure to check this out when I do.

Maybe it's just my age, but I don't like the new colors or sizes of the icons in ios7. Is there any way to change the colors and increase their size ? I'm talking about the ones located on the top of the screen. Why did Apple think we would like the bright orange, canary yellow and apple green they gave us?

avatar

Michael Simon

Not sure what you mean about the size--they're practically identical to the previous ones--but I'm with you on the colors. Unfortunately there's no way to change or remove them; the best tip I can offer is to hide them all in a folder.

Previously you could reply to an incoming call waiting with a text message. it seems that option is no longer available on the IOS 7or am I just not seeing it? If there is a way to reply to an incoming call waiting please tell me, I really loved that feature!!!

avatar

Michael Simon

If you tap the Message button on the incoming call screen, you'll be able to reply with a text. Also in the phone settings (Phone>Respond with text) you can customize up to three responses.

avatar

jkeola01

Michael, I see that option for an initial incoming call. However, if I am already on the phone with someone and another call comes in, the only options are 1. answer end current call, 2. answer hold current call or 3. decline incoming call.

Before if I was already talking to someone on the phone and an incoming call came in, I could "answer the call", and then select chose to reply with a text message, then chose the message response I wanted.

I truly appreciate your articles and you taking the time to respond!!!

avatar

Michael Simon

Hmmmm. Just tried it and it looks like that feature has been removed. Not sure why.

why safari smart search field setting in iOS 7 keeps reloading pages when i have it set to off? And even pages from my reading list that has been already deleted , I already tried turning off and on the phone erased all cookies and browsing history but I still get Top Hits list on the search field when is off. .. Any Help??

avatar

Michael Simon

Same thing happening to me. That switch does nothing. Must be a bug.

avatar

Jha76

Do you think Erase All Content and Settings will do any good ? Of course, after doing a back up first

avatar

Michael Simon

You could try, but it's a longshot. Seems as though it's a Safari bug. I did some searching and couldn't find anyone with a fix, but then again most people probably wouldn't ever notice.

Is there a way to externally reset your iphone? I have been experimenting with the head movement option to scroll and it wont work right! I am currently locked out of my phone because i cant make it move! Please help!

avatar

Michael Simon

You should be able to just turn it off, but if you can't, you can restore your iPhone through iTunes. Just plug it into your computer. But you'll lose whatever changes you've made since your last backup.

Thanks for the article. I needed this.

@LeCarcajou: "lessen." :)

Hi. I have successfully loaded ios7 yesterday. I had 2 app updates yesterday and 5 today, all loaded successfully. But they're still showing in the app store folder. They're not showing as to be updated but to just open them. I've opened them but they're still not clearing down from the app store update folder. On the old system once you'd done the update the notification would disappear, from the app store folder. Hope that makes sense? Can anyone tell me how to clear the app store update notifications down please? If they start accumulating there'll be loads of them.

avatar

Michael Simon

When automatic updates are turned on, the App Store collects the last two weeks of updates. There's no way to clear it, unfortunately.

avatar

dolly10

Hi thanks for the prompt reply. If I down load manually will they clear down then? There could be an awful lot of update notifications there in 2 weeks. I prefer it when once you've updated they disappear.

avatar

Michael Simon

Pretty sure it's the same thing. Updated apps are catalogued in the updates tab.
