The auction house Sotheby's is putting one of only six known working Apple-1 computers on the auction block next month. The very first Apple computer, the Apple-1 is where it all began. The computer consisted of a just a circuit board hand-built by Steve Wozniak in Steve Jobs' parents' garage. You had to get your geek on if you bought one and make your own case, add your own keyboard and monitor, and wire in your own power supply. Nonetheless, the Apple-1 went on sale in 1976 for $666.66. Wozniak and Jobs went on to produce about 200 units, but with this something insanely great was born.
Sotheby's estimates [PDF link] there are about 50 Apple-1s still around, though only six are known to be in working condition. Want to own this sacred piece of Apple history? Sotheby's estimates it will take about $180K to make it yours.
To be honest, nothing about this whole thing seems weird to us, except our lack of $180K available to spend on a 36-year old computer. But it got us wondering: what other cool Apple products have changed hands in the auction houses over the years?
Check out this slideshow of some of the Cupertino rarities we found.
