Going somewhere neat this weekend? Or are you one of those people who seized the off season opportunity and purchased plane tickets for a vacation in the fall? You should use these free apps to check in to the places you're going and find new places to discover.

If you and your friends use Facebook Places, you can keep tabs on them with Checkin Map! Places Browser. The app displays a hefty world map (Yes! The entire world! Antarctica included) with pegs to denote where your friends are or were hanging out. You can also use the app to check into Facebook Places, find deals and coupons, and receive alerts when your friends are checking in at a place nearby.

Addicted to checking in? CheckIn+, from the makers of IM+, lets you check in to Facebook Places and Foursquare at the same time, and utilizes augmented reality to show you what's around.

Gowalla is the ultimate travel companion. The service offers its own city guides and ones curated by your pals on Facebook. You can also share interesting places, restaurants and events with friends online. Gowalla also provides social guides for a multitude of cities around the world. Uh, except Bucharest. Hey guys, where's the love for my people's capital? Oh, wait, Gowalla also has this thing called "Nearby Guide" which shows the most checked in places around to help guide you to where the locals are. Travelers, this is the kind of "checking in" you want to do.
