How To Conquer the Awesome Features of Image Capture

The Image Capture application built into Mac OS X used to serve a single purpose, but over the years it’s become a Swiss Army knife for getting photos out of your camera, scanner, or iOS device. Don’t believe us? Then read on!
Apple has turned the Image Capture application included with OS X into quite a versatile little program over the years, as evidenced by the number of scanner manufacturers who have eschewed building their own import software in recent years in favor of using the one included with every Mac.
However, Image Capture holds some hidden secrets -- it’s not just simply a way to import and scan photos, assuming you know where to look. Here’s a handful of ways you can get the most out of this slick little tool.

Scanning with the built-in software on my Brother MFC was a real pain. Now I can just use Image Capture and have actual control over the stuff I have to scan. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

![Stop Applications from Opening Automatically
If you prefer to skip Image Capture completely and have another application -- perhaps iPhoto, Aperture or virtually anything -- launch whenever you connect a camera or iOS device. Simply connect the device, open Image Capture and change “Connecting this [device] opens” to whatever you’d like -- including “No application,” which will do nothing at all. Each camera or device can have its own special settings, too. 1-stop_applications_from_opening.jpg](http://www.maclife.com/files/imagecache/futureus_imagegallery_slide/gallery/1-stop_applications_from_opening.jpg)

![Share Devices with Other Computers
Want to let another computer on your network use a scanner or even import photos from a camera? Simply connect the device and click “Share [device]” in the lower left corner of Image Capture. Quit the application and open it on the other computer and you can now import photos from there, or even scan images directly from their scanner. 4-share-devices-with-other-computers.jpg](http://www.maclife.com/files/imagecache/futureus_imagegallery_slide/gallery/4-share-devices-with-other-computers.jpg)
![AutoImporter: Consider It Done!
Maybe having an application open whenever you connect a device isn’t going far enough -- that’s why Apple includes AutoImporter with Image Capture. To automatically transfer items from your camera to your computer every time you connect, simply change “Connecting this [device] opens” to “AutoImporter” and watch in amazement as Image Capture transfers your photos to the AutoImporter folder in your Home > Pictures folder. 5-autoimporter.jpg](http://www.maclife.com/files/imagecache/futureus_imagegallery_slide/gallery/5-autoimporter.jpg)
