The calm before the storm. This is what Moscone West looks like before it gets invaded by the Apple faithful.

All's quiet so far at the corner of 4th and Howard St.

Inside Moscone West. There's not much going on yet. But that doesn't stop Macworld security from getting miffed at us for taking pictures. Luckily, the "But we're press…these are not the droids you're looking for" strategy seems to deflect them.

We think the secret to Macworld's power is hidden in this cryptic sign. Because when we dare take its picture, no less than three guards are called over to manage the security breach.

There are charging stations scattered about, with AC outlets and USB ports.

Unfortunately for us, none of the USB ports were kicking out any power. Here's hoping they get that worked out before everyone else gets here.

Upstairs, there's an exhibit of original and fan art from South Park. We were warned not to take any pictures.

The Music Studio will be bumping for the rest of the week. But for now, it's quiet.

Silent Frisco will be hosting DJs playing a "silent disco." Don wireless headphones, and dance like a maniac to music no one else can hear! You can bet we'll be back here for pictures. And dancing. Untz-untz-untz-untz.

At the press preview, one of the items that caught our eye was the Lantronix xPrint Server. Plug that tiny box into your network, and you can turn any printer into a wi-fi printer, accessible from your iPad or iPhone. Neat!

There were also some groovy hardshell cases by Lifstil

WritePad takes your fingerprint scrawlings, and translates them to real, live, editable text.

Fujitsu's ScanSnap 1100 is the size of--well, a really portable scanner. But it's super-quick, easily handles everything from photos to business cards, and can scan directly into Evernote.

Gavio cranked up some old-school Metallica on the Novocaine speaker dock.

Gavio also put a bird on this speaker. A disco bird. Someone's been watching Portlandia.
