Give Your Mac The Finger

Computer security is no laughing matter. Even Average Joes should be concerned about the imminent threat of a security breach. We take it for granted that our computers, both desktop and notebook, contain a lot of personal information. Photos, letters, tax documents, projects, etc. So what can you do?

Basic security should start with storing your computer in a secure environment - preventing access to the hardware is a big step to having a secure computing environment. Next, you will want to have password protection using a strong password. You might even use file, folder or disk encryption. Better yet, use a combination of all of the above.

Now all these layers of protection can add to the number of passwords you need to remember. That is where a new device from UPEK lets you place your finger on the problem. Their new Eikon Digital Privacy Manager is a new device that secures your computer with a USB fingerprint reader. It's fully trainable and will accept any finger on either hand (maybe some toes too). The software calmly tells you to register more than one finger in case you handle sharp objects for a living or you're a bit clumsy.

Once it's set up, you can log into your Mac, unlock the screen saver, and perform various other password functions with one swipe of a finger. Finally, you can give your Mac the finger and feel good about it. The device will also work with Windows if you are using Boot Camp. Although, I'm more inclined to give Windows the finger for other reasons.

I've used this product for a few days and find its portability make it useful for use on both my iMac and Macbook Pro. You can find the device at various online retailers for under $50.00. It's definitely worth a look if you're interested in securing your computer at the touch of a finger.

I've missed the convenience of a fingerprint scanner since I got my MBP last summer to replace my Lenovo Thinkpad T60.
