Here is an another easy way to do it.
# 1. Install the Greasemonkey Extension for Firefox.
# 2. Right-click this .js file and select "Install User Script" (if you don't see that option try step one again)
# 3. Now on every youtube video page there should be a red bar at the top, that says "Save As" to download Flash video. (see screenshots here)
# 4. Right click the text in the red bar, select "Save Link As," and save the file as a .flv file. Firefox will rty to save it as "get_video.php," you need to change the ".php" to ".flv," and change the first part to whatever you prefer.

I use a couple of pretty handy Firefox add-ons for my general video-grabbing needs:
1. YousableTubefix: it's a neat Greasemonkey script which pretty much enhances Youtube's interface and gives you the option to download videos in either MP4 or FLV HiQ formats, if available (older videos tend to only be available, for example, in standard FLV, whereas newer HD ones, can be downloaded in high quality MP4).
2. DownloadHelper: this one not only grabs videos from YouTube but pretty much all major video-sharing sites. You name it, it's there. It gives you FLV files.

to download youtube.com videos, I use some software called TubeTV. It's on the apple downloads site and is completely free. The catche is it's mac-only software, which, you should be a mac user anyway

or if you are using firefox there are several addons that can do the same thing at the puch of a button. "dowloadhelper" is on that works great for me. than you can convert it for ipod using isquint (free) or visualhub ($30).

Yeah, I find that downloading the get_video in the activity window is the quickest way. Then I just pop it into iSquint to convert either for iPod or TV.

When you have a vid open in Safari, open the Activity window. Scroll to a file that is bigger than the rest. Option-double click it to download. Should be downloading a file called Get_video. Just rename it in Finder.
For free conversion, use QuickMix (Google it), import it, and Sae As movie to make a QuickTime file.
All this is complicated at first, but it's free.

The YouTube is a great place that allows to watch, upload and share videos. But it doesn't allow to download videos on their desktop. Now many free tools has come where you can download videos. But only few tools where you can download youtube videos directly through just copy and paste the URL of the video. In which one of the tool is youtubex which is mentioned in above post.No need to install any software. Just click the download option.

I converts videos to work on an ipod, quicktime, WMP - blah, and if it is just the music you want use their mp3 option........oh yeah and its freequality stays great as long as it wasn't really detailed to begin with.
it says beta but I have used it for maybe a year and couldn't be happier with it.
