How can I get faxing to work with my DSL setup for occasional use?
Posted 11/02/2007 at 2:55:49pm | by The Mac|Life Staff

Since fax is last-century analog technology and DSL is modern digital, they don’t mix. You could plug a phone cord into your Mac’s internal modem (if it’s got one) and use Printer Setup Utility’s Fax PDF feature.

Just open your document in any application and select File > Print (Command-P), and on the Print sheet, click the PDF button and select Fax PDF. Enter the recipient’s fax number manually or use the integrated Address Book to designate a contact or group.

Your Mac can also receive faxes if you open System Preferences’ Print And Fax pane and check the appropriate box and type in the number of the telephone line that’s plugged into the Mac.

Otherwise, online services like eFax are replacing old-school fax machines. Check out www.faxbeep.com for user discussions and reviews of over 100 such services.

Who'd have thunk fax would make it to the 21st century?

avatarFax is outdated?

Yes, it most certainly is. But unfortunately in the UK there is legal precedent that fax is acceptable for transmitting legal documents but scanning and e-mailing a document, then printing it, is not.

Stupid, I know, but fax cannot yet be consigned to history :-(
