How can I tell what version of Mac OS X I have on my computer?

Select About This Mac from the Apple menu (the Apple icon in the top left), and a window will appear containing your version number. If it's 10.2.x, you're running Jaguar, if it's 10.3.x, you're running Panther, if it's 10.4.x, you're running Tiger, and if it's 10.5.x you're running Leopard (you lucky dog you).

Which cat do you have?

You can use sw_vers if you only have ssh access to figure out the OS X version.

Is there a command that can be used in a shell to determine the version? Thank you.

While I can appreciate the massive knowledge and iterweb skillz as those already posted may have, I thank you for catering to ALL Mac users. Remember folks, you were once noobs too.

Thanks again Mac life. I have added another bookmark for you.

Jeez. Really? Why don't you start telling people how to do things like take their Mac out of the box, or how to press the power button. Or maybe something difficult like, right clicking a mouse, or turning the volume knob on their speakers?

Come on, can we get some real content on here? I can't believe the editors let this one go to press.

You guys bore me with this day 1 crap. I've just deleted my bookmark.

In the Apple Menu, check "About this Mac"

And if you want more information about which operating system your mac is running, click on the line that lists the version and you'll get the build number and sometimes more.
