How to Remove the iPhone SIM Card
Posted 06/30/2007 at 12:32:13am | by Roman Loyola

The SIM card in the iPhone is removable, but it's hidden. To remove the SIM card, you need a paper clip.

We are checking to see if this voids your iPhone warranty. If you are concerned that it might, please don't perform this task.

location of SIM card on iPhone

The iPhone's SIM card is located behind this door.

1. Locate the SIM Card Slot

The slot is located at the top of the iPhone, between the headphone jack and the power button.

The paper clip is a valuable tech tool.

2. Open the Slot

Take your paper clip and insert it into the little hole. Then firmly push down until the slot pops up, as shown below.

Pop goes the SIM card.

3. Remove the SIM Card

The SIM card is in a cradle. You can pop the card out of the cradle.

To replace the SIM card, put the card back in the cradle. The cradle and card are notched in a way that forces you to replace the card on the proper side. Then just slide the card back into the iPhone.

"I've heard that EDGE is technically 3G."

Actually, EDGE is 2.5G. It's the bridge between 2G (GPRS - 56k modem speed) and 3G (EV/DO 1x and other acronyms - the broadband everyone loves). EDGE has a maximum theoretical rate of 384kbps. Depending on your area (in general, not just AT&T), EDGE may not be available or there may be limited access to it even if it is available (limited number of open data connections).

avatarSIM card

I'm overjoyed to learn that the SIM card is removable -- that was one of my major concerns! But does this mean that you could stick the SIM in another phone, and it would work? I assume it does *not* mean I could stick a T-Mobile SIM in there, instead, since the phone is locked... right?

One iPhone early reviewer addressed this idea specifically and said that it was not feasible to swap in a T-Mobile SIM card.

avatarSim card in iPhone....

It's nice that the card is removable and you've provided a useful service in showing how to remove it but I ask...... what's the point?
This thing will only work with the supplied SIM card and only on AT&Ts
2G network! NOTHING will work on the damn thing until the phone is activated ! not the Wi-Fi, Not the iPod not the camera, NOTHING! What a crock of S*** that is!
I was hoping for an unlocked version and @ least 60gbs of memory. I can't even get 10% of my Video/Music on this thing!
I know a lot of early adopters who will be suffering the pangs of buyer's remorse when they realize just how badly they've been let down. That should happen about Christmas time when the next generation goes on sale for holiday giving.
Nice try, Steve, but no cigar from an early adopter you burned 5 years ago.

avatarThe point

Gwats1957: It's nice that the card is removable and you've provided a useful service in showing how to remove it but I ask...... what's the point?

I actually wrote this article while on hold with AT&T. I had activation problems (which I plan to write about), and the AT&T tech wanted the SIM card number, which I blurred out in the photo. She told me how to remove the SIM card.

It turns out that the SIM card number is the same as the ICCID on the back of the iPhone box. At the time, when I asked if the SIM card number was listed on the back of the iPhone box, the AT&T rep said no.

I was hoping for a diamond encrusted, solid gold, 10 Terabyte, with free service. Man I can't even fit 10% of my 20 pentabyte music library on it. I hate steve Jobs for being mean to me. The specs have been out for 5 months, why would you expect anything more?

I don't know anybody that was let down with the iPhone. It is the best phone on the market even if it is lacking a few features, features that you probably don't need.

Don't be such a whiny beotch!

avatarOwners of cellphones in the

Owners of cellphones in the United States will soon be allowed to legally break software locks on their handsets in order to use them with competing carriers, under new copyright rules.
The new rule was approved Wednesday by the U.S. Library of Congress, along with other copyright exemptions. The other changes will let film professors copy snippets from DVDs for educational purposes and will allow blind people to use special software to read copyright-protected electronic books. avatarFor the person Who's enjoying the iphone

Hey dude! Wake man!Everyone is trying to hack the thing here and put a sim from a different company into the phone while your rich daddy buying you the dimond can afford AT&T! Well some of us don't have rich fathers at all. so were thinking about switching to a different network to hack a sim with a company cheaper than AT&T. I have Verizon. We don't run on sims at all! We have a cheap litte divice called A V CARD! I wanted that iphone so bad. Apple offered verizon the iphone first but verizon turned them down and Apple went to AT&T and made a profit. That wasn't fair. That was'nt fair AT ALL! I could of had the iphone right now and wouldn't be here yelling at your rich butt! Yeah I've had it rough. I dispise verizon but I can't do anything anymore about it. Verizon will never get the iphone. They are getting the P.R.A.D.A phone a remake of the one true phone, the iphone. So don't tell us everything is all fat and happy, cause it's not. it's not at all. And don't you dare reply to me searing! cause I've had just about enough of everything from phone services and AT&T customers and especially verizon!

I'm glad that I now know how to get to the SIM card. I need to get service in the Caribbean for when I go on biz so looking to get Caribbean cellular service provider to connect me for much cheaper rates that AT&T in the U.S.

avatarJust got off the phone with

Just got off the phone with AT&T there are NO unlock codes available from them - you would have to do this on your own. no idea if this voids warranty. my guess is you can unlock the phone (hack it) and then you can use it with any sim card sans AT&T after that

You couldn't be more wrong! While technically there's still a few more hours until christmas, I'm pretty sure the next version isn't gonna make it before then. I personally think it's the best $400 I've ever spent! I love it more every day. It delivers everything it promises. Sounds like you're looking for an iPod Touch.......... You're a tool.

avatarAh ye ATT noobs...

ATT/Cingular have had that 3G logo on all of their SIM cards for about a year now. It has absolutely nothing to do with your phone having 3G...although a 3G phone won't work without the 3G logo on your card, the 3G logo SIm card itself works with any ATT/Cingular phone.

No, the phone is STILL locked - you can take the SIM out but you can't put someone elses' SIM in.

The reason you can take it out is multiple:

a) The SIM cards DO get "burnt out" sometimes...in CIngular/ATT forum terms, you can "Fry" your card. This allows you to go into any ATT store and get a new SIM card put in.

b) You CAN take your SIM card out and use it in another cellphone that is ATT/Cingular locked. You can not use it in any other cellphone company phone. This, for example, allows you to leave your iPhone at home while going to WDW and not wanting to break your phone, but still wanting to take your trusty beat up old Razr along.

c) When you eventually upgrade (and lets face it - as soon as they come out with a 3G model, lots of us are going to upgrade) you can eBay your old iPhone without the SIM card, and the eventual buyer can activate a new SIM card at their ATT dealer.

But don't read anything else into the 3G logo - that has been on the cards for months and months. Its just a logo.

avatarhere is one reason you take the sim card out

I'm heading to Europe in 2 weeks, do not want to be receiving calls on my phone - ATT just told me that if my phone rings and goes to voice mail, it's considered an international call, the bounce to voicemail (whether you check it or not). So, I plan to remove my SIM card while over there, and keep my iPhone with me as a new toy, phonebook, ipod, camera, web and email surfing tool every time I hit a hotspot. Oh, and I just checked, with the card removed I can still surf, check email, do everything except phone and sms. ATT told me, incredibly, that my only option was to turn off my intl service, but that that would turn off my wifi (which sounded like bull).

avatarAnd then...?

Does this procedure void the warranty of the iPhone?

If you put another Cingular (or ATT) SIM card in the iPhone, does it still work?

Login or register to post comments
avatarNo problem

I took my SIM card from an older Cingular Phone and inserted it into the iPhone and see what happened:

1-The iPhone didn't work as a telephone. It asked me to connect the iPhone to my computer to activate it again. An when I tried to do so, it didn't work, perhaps because I had a pre-paid plan with no contract.

2-I could do all the other things with the iPhone, like sending and receiving mails, browse the web, take photos, etcetera...

3-The older tlephone (a veteran silver Razor) accepted the iPhone’s card and worked well, as a respectable old gadget.

4-I think this procedure doesn't void the warranty. Actually, Apple has this trick (for removing the SIM card) in its website (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305746)

I hope you find this helpful...
