Thank you SOO much... i was planning on getting an iPhone 4 and taking the SIM card out from my old phone. Except I never even knew the iphone had a tray on the side to put the SIM card.(I thought I would've had to crack the thing open and put the card in 0.0)

Perfect!  No technical explanations, uses tools I have around the house (paper clip), and has pictures!  Just tells me what I need to know and leavse the rest (technical information) out!!  So easy a caveman could do it - if he had a paper clip...

To continue from my rant above, after setting the iPhone up I took out my SIM card and went to put everything back in the box to giftwrap. It was then that I found a tiny image on the packaging and a SIM card removal tool clipped in to the packaging. Not sure how I missed it before, except the image is the size of a postage stamp.

It still doesn't explain why this step is not included in the getting started manual.

I just bought an iPhone online in Hong Kong and it was delivered by TNT, unlocked. Excitedly I took out the user guide, bizarrely called 'finger tips' and learned how to turn the phone on.

First thing the phone said, 'please insert SIM card'. Aha. Why wasn't that Step 1? OK, but, like how?? Why on earth did I have to search online for ten minutes to find this helpful tutorial. Then for another 10 minutes to find a paperclip, in this paperless world. Eventually I found a needle in my girlfriend's sewing kit I could use.

But the phone still doesn't recognise my SIM. It appears I need to download the latest version of iTunes to my computer.

Things better be smoother than this once the initial hurdles are cleared. I tell you something, I'm glad I'm struggling with this now rather than on Christmas morning - there's nothing like a Christmas present with the 'batteries not included'. But hang on, another thought.. once I've registered my SIM card, what will happen when my girlfriend tries to use her card?

My only question is this-
If I remove the sim, can I safely replace it with another sim from AT&T?

I don't see any logical reason why I wouldn't be able to, however, I figured it would be better to ask before dropping the money to get one and finding out it didn't work.

I wanted to know that if my SIM card would work in an iPhone 3G. I currently have a Nokia 2600 and I wanted to know if I switched the SIM to a 3G iphone, would it work for what ever my plan covers (right now I only have unlimited calling and text...soon media net or whatever they call it on AT&T)?

I work for a small cell phone company and am a wireless data specialist and we have people use their i-phones on our network. as long as it is unlocked it "should" work, the only problem might be is with the internet on the phone, depending on if the phone will hold your networks settings. We are able to support i-phones for data and MMS others might not be able to. Just check with your provider to see if they can support it for web before you buy it.

Hi guys, i have a question. Is it possible to swap sims if they are both att? my friend is planning on getting the 3g iphone coming this 11th and he'll be giving me his old one. The thing is, i tried putting my sim card in today and when i turn it on i get no signal and then i restarted it and now it gives me itunes picture and a plug. what does that mean? is it possible to use that iphone with my sim card or would i have to hack it? ty please reply or email me @ dsants@gmail.com

Being able to remove the sim chip doesn't gain you anything , because the phone is still locked. That means you can't put another sim chip in there. On other unlocked phones, this is useful during international travel when you can drop a prepaid chip in there.

Once the chip is out, it can be used in another phone...if that other phone is already unlocked.

I'm not sure what all this hype is about.

Popped my iPhone SIM into my old *unlocked* Sony Ericsson T68i ... worked like a charm. When I put the SIM back into the iPhone, I couldn't get connected to AT&T's network. Tried turning the power on and off, synching with my Mac, nothing worked. I turned the Airplane mode on and off, and that did the trick!

I took my SIM card from an older Cingular Phone and inserted it into the iPhone and see what happened:

1-The iPhone didn't work as a telephone. It asked me to connect the iPhone to my computer to activate it again. An when I tried to do so, it didn't work, perhaps because I had a pre-paid plan with no contract.

2-I could do all the other things with the iPhone, like sending and receiving mails, browse the web, take photos, etcetera...

3-The older tlephone (a veteran silver Razor) accepted the iPhone’s card and worked well, as a respectable old gadget.

4-I think this procedure doesn't void the warranty. Actually, Apple has this trick (for removing the SIM card) in its website (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305746)

ATT/Cingular have had that 3G logo on all of their SIM cards for about a year now. It has absolutely nothing to do with your phone having 3G...although a 3G phone won't work without the 3G logo on your card, the 3G logo SIm card itself works with any ATT/Cingular phone.

No, the phone is STILL locked - you can take the SIM out but you can't put someone elses' SIM in.

The reason you can take it out is multiple:

a) The SIM cards DO get "burnt out" sometimes...in CIngular/ATT forum terms, you can "Fry" your card. This allows you to go into any ATT store and get a new SIM card put in.

b) You CAN take your SIM card out and use it in another cellphone that is ATT/Cingular locked. You can not use it in any other cellphone company phone. This, for example, allows you to leave your iPhone at home while going to WDW and not wanting to break your phone, but still wanting to take your trusty beat up old Razr along.

c) When you eventually upgrade (and lets face it - as soon as they come out with a 3G model, lots of us are going to upgrade) you can eBay your old iPhone without the SIM card, and the eventual buyer can activate a new SIM card at their ATT dealer.

But don't read anything else into the 3G logo - that has been on the cards for months and months. Its just a logo.

It's nice that the card is removable and you've provided a useful service in showing how to remove it but I ask...... what's the point?
This thing will only work with the supplied SIM card and only on AT&Ts
2G network! NOTHING will work on the damn thing until the phone is activated ! not the Wi-Fi, Not the iPod not the camera, NOTHING! What a crock of S*** that is!
I was hoping for an unlocked version and @ least 60gbs of memory. I can't even get 10% of my Video/Music on this thing!
I know a lot of early adopters who will be suffering the pangs of buyer's remorse when they realize just how badly they've been let down. That should happen about Christmas time when the next generation goes on sale for holiday giving.
Nice try, Steve, but no cigar from an early adopter you burned 5 years ago.
