Call a Podcast a Podcast in iTunes
I downloaded a lecture as an MP3 file. But iTunes won't let me put it in the Podcast folder. It plays fine on my iPod touch as music, but I can't use the podcast navigation controls. How can I fix this?
You’re in luck. Find the lecture in your Music list, click it to select it, and then press Command-I to see the Get Info window. Click the Options tab and look for a dropdown menu labeled Media Kind--it’ll currently read Music. Now just change it to Podcast, and click the OK button.

That's all there is to it.
Poof, that track instantly vanishes from your Music list and appears in your Podcasts list. The artist name will be used for the podcast name, and the track’s name becomes the episode title.
Now just sync it to your iPod touch and listen to it with the iPod’s cool podcast-and-audiobook-only controls, including varying the speed, jumping back 30 seconds, and remembering the playback position.

Thanks for this - it's so simple, yet not something your likely to run into without being shown. I've been wishing I had the 30 sec rewind for some lectures that were in my music folder. This fix worked great, although the only problem is that there are some unusual sorting and groupings. It treats every album within a group as a separate podcast. Still, it's worth it for the other benefits
