I have set both my iPhone 4 and my iPad 2 to automatically open iTunes when connected to my MacBook Pro, in order to be synced. Neither of them opens iTunes, but they do open iPhoto. How do I get them to open iTunes as they should?
Open iTunes (version 10 or later), and connect your device. In the Summary tab of the device pane, disable the option to “Open iTunes when this device is connected,” and click Apply. Then re-enable the option to “Open iTunes when this device is connected,” click Apply again, and then click Sync.

Clicking Yes in this dialog will install the iTunes Helper so that devices are recognized when plugged in to your Mac.
A dialog will appear that reads, “Do you want iTunes to open automatically when you connect this device?” Click Yes, and then wait for the sync to finish. After the sync, disconnecting your device and reconnecting it should open iTunes automatically.
If the option to “Open iTunes when this device is connected” is dimmed, navigate to iTunes > Preferences > Devices, uncheck the option to “Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically,” and click OK.
