How to Choose Between HD and SD Rentals on Apple TV

High definition video is one of the biggest reasons to own an Apple TV. But, if your internet connection doesn’t support the bandwidth needs of HD video rentals, you’re pretty much out of luck. Fortunately, you can still rent videos in standard definition quality from Apple (and at a cheaper price, too!) on your Apple TV. Here's how!

How to Switch Between HD and SD Rentals on Apple TV

From the home screen on your Apple TV, navigate to Settings > General > iTunes Store.

Once on the iTunes Store setting screen, scroll down to the option labeled “Rent High Definition”. This option is set to “On” by default, and can be turned “Off” by simply pressing the center button on your remote. In the “On” position, the iTunes Store will only show HD rentals and pricing information; in the “Off” position, iTunes will show only SD content and pricing information for SD purchases.

Now, whenever you navigate to an iTunes Store rental listing, the prices that are listed will be for SD video instead of HD. Not only are the prices cheaper, but the rentals will also download quicker. When you wish to rent HD content, just go back to the settings and flip the switch to “On”.
