Different videos call for different effects. When you want to show changes over a long-period of time, there’s time lapse, but when you want to show the detail in something that happens during a short period of time, you'll want to utilize the slow motion effect. We’ll show you how to pull this off with iMovie for Mac. Your homemade action films will look so much better.
After adding the video segment to your iMovie project, mouse-over the clip, and then click the small gear in the lower, left-hand corner of the clip. In the pop up menu, select “Clip Adjustments.”

In the Clip Adjustments panel, locate the Speed slider. Move the speed slider to the left to slow down the clip, or to the right to speed up the clip. The percentage by which the clip is slowed down or sped up is listed in the box to the right of the slider. In the box below the percentage, you will see the new clip size.

Halving the speed of the clip (slowing by 50%) will double the length of the clip. So, with our 1.3 second clip, the 50% slowed version was 2.6 seconds.
When you’re done slowing down your clip, click the Done button to save the clip adjustments.
