The first step is to download Boxcar from the iTunes App Store. After launching the application and signing up for an account, you will be presented with the Services menu. Click “Add a Service” to begin.

On the Add a Service screen, select “Email Account” from the list of possible notifications.

In the Email service setup section, type a new name for your service, specify a sound, select the application it opens (“Apple Mail” is actually a choice here), then select the alert style, and choose whether or not to update the application badge. When you’re done, click Save.

You will then get a notification, telling you that a message has been sent to the email account you signed up with.

After a few minutes, you will get an email from Boxcar with your “@push.boxcar.io” email address listed. Copy this email address as we will be using it to set up email forwarding next.

Next, we’ll set up email forwarding in Gmail. If you use another mail service, check your documentation to see if your provider supports forwarding.

To begin setting up forwarding in Gmail, navigate to Settings > Mail Settings > Forwarding and POP/IMAP. Once there, click the “Add a forwarding address” button.

In the pop up dialog, paste in your “@push.boxcar.io” address and click Next.

Gmail will then let you know that a confirmation code has been sent to that address. After a few seconds, you will receive a push notification through Boxcar on your iOS device with the confirmation code in it.

Return to the Forwarding and POP/IMAP section of Gmail and type in the confirmation code you received via push notification. When you are finished, click Verify.

Once you have verified your Boxcar push address, you will be able to select “Forward a copy of incoming mail to” in the Forwarding and POP/IMAP section of Gmail’s settings. Once you do that, you will be able to select the action in the second drop-down menu. We’ll choose “keep Gmail’s copy in the Inbox.” When you are finished, click “Save Changes” at the bottom of the page.

After you have set everything up, you will begin receiving push notifications to your iOS device via Boxcar.
