Jailbreaking allows you to do a multitude of fun things with your phone that Apple wouldn't normally allow you to do, like install apps that enable tethering and adding a little more customization to iOS. With just a few simple steps, you can have your iOS device sporting a new theme or running a new tool that Apple wouldn’t allow in the App Store.
Some Rules of the Jailbreaking Road
While the process of jailbreaking has become easier over the years, thanks in large part to the iPhone Dev Team and their jailbreaking tools, there are still a few things that you need to know (and will need to keep in mind throughout the process). Here’s the important stuff you’ll need to know before proceeding:
First, the jailbreak for iOS 5.1 is currently only available to non-A5 processor iOS devices capable of running iOS 5.1. This means that you can only jailbreak the following devices: iPhone 3GS, both the CdMA and GSM versions of the iPhone 4, the first-gen iPad, iPod touch 3G, and iPod touch 4G.
Second, iOS 5.1 is a “tethered” jailbreak, which means that in order to reboot your device, you’ll need to have your iOS device attached to your computer and follow the prompts to reboot in the redsn0w application > Extras > Just boot section.
Lastly, if you wish to keep your jailbreak device jailbroken, the golden rule is not to update your device when Apple releases a new version of iOS. It is always best to wait until there is a new jailbreak available before upgrading.
