Long-distance relationships are tough, but when you snag somebody way, way out of your league, you gotta make it work somehow. Luckily, technology means you never have to go too long without seeing your significant other.

iChat brings sweethearts together.
When you want to have a face-to-face conversation, fire up FaceTime (the Mac version is $0.99 in the Mac App Store, and it’s already on all iOS devices with front-facing cameras) or iChat (free, included in Mac OS X). This allows you to talk over Wi-Fi for free without eating up all of your minutes. But every once in a while you gotta have a good ol’ fashioned phone conversation. If you’ve chosen a cheap phone plan to save money for flights, you’re in luck. The Google Voice app is free and lets you talk for free over Wi-Fi.

Save your anytime minutes by making free calls to anyone in the U.S. with Google Voice.
When it’s time to book a flight to go visit, nothing beats the Kayak app in the App Store. It’ll allow you to quickly find the cheapest flights of the week, and even sends push notifications for outrageously cheap flights, which means you and your lubbydumpkins can spend less time worrying about when you’ll see each other and more time actually with each other.

Kayak is our flight-finder of choice.
