How to Restore an iPad Through the iCloud

My father-in-law doesn’t own a computer, and he’s considering getting an iPad for email, apps, internet surfing, and more. I know you can set them up, update, back up, and use an iPad without a computer, but what if the iPad were to just die? Is it possible to restore an iPad without connecting it to a Mac or PC if a simple hard reset doesn’t solve problems?
With the introduction of iOS 5 and iCloud, Apple added the ability to go completely PC-free. By default, most of your iTunes Store purchases are backed up automatically and stored using your Apple ID, absolutely free; this includes TV shows, music, apps, and most movies.

Enabling iCloud Backup lets you restore your device without a computer.
With an iCloud account, you also get storage for complete iOS device backups. Simply navigate to Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup, and turn on iCloud Backup. You will automatically get 5GB of free storage on iCloud; however, you can purchase additional storage at relatively inexpensive pricing.

Restoring an iCloud backup is easy.
If you ever need to reset your device to factory settings, then you’ll be able to restore from an iCloud backup during setup. A factory reset can be accomplished in Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings, or by connecting it to a Mac or PC (if he has access to one, even a friend’s), and restoring it with iTunes. If it just dies, make sure it’s charged, and try holding down the Sleep and Wake buttons for 10 seconds to force a restart.
