How to Stream Your iMac to your TV
Can I project my iMac screen onto the TV via an Apple TV?

The HDMI cable is a magical one that lets you hook up your iMac to your television.
Unfortunately, AirPlay is out of the question since it’s limited to iOS devices. But if your Mac has a Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt port, you can purchase an HDMI adapter from various third-party manufacturers, like MonoPrice, Belkin, and Griffin, to tether your computer to the television. The Thunderbolt-to-HDMI adapters can even carry sound over the connection, so you don’t have to worry about plugging in an auxiliary cable.

I've hooked up the adapter but no sound. Could you be a little more specific about how you change the sound settings? Thanks.

This adapter works great. The one thing you do have to remember (and I found this out the hard way) is that you need to go into the Sound Settings and make sure the output is set correctly or you will only get video and no sound.
