If you’re not on a Mac or just don’t care about saving your contacts on your computer, you can do it without a computer at all. Instead of syncing your Gmail account as an IMAP server, use Exchange. So long as you’re on iOS 4 or higher, you’ll be able to incorporate multiples Exchange accounts without holdups.

Open Settings > Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Tap Add Account > pick Microsoft Exchange. Put your Gmail account information in the allotted field and leave the Domain field blank. Enter your email address as the Username and fill in your password. Tap Next at the top of the screen. If the Unable to Verify Certificate box appears, click cancel. In the new Server field that appears, type m.google.com and press Next.

Return to Settings > Mail, Calendar, and Contacts and tap your new email address. Make sure the sliders for Mail, Contacts, and Calendars are all switched to On.
