How to Use FileVault and Time Machine

I’ve never enabled FileVault because I’ve heard that it made backing up with Time Machine difficult. Is there a way to make FileVault and Time Machine play nice with each other?
It’s true that FileVault and Time Machine have historically not played well together, but with OS X Lion, Apple has thankfully fixed these issues. Time Machine now has the ability to back up your Mac even if a FileVault user is logged in. This works because FileVault 2 encrypts the entire disk, instead of encrypting data on a per user basis. In addition, you can also browse your Time Machine backups in the Time Machine interface, something that wasn’t possible when using FileVault with older versions of Mac OS X. Previously, you had to browse your backups manually in the Finder.

Lock down your Mac with FileVault -- and still use the automatic backup of Time Machine.
