It's definitely there in iOS 4.1+
You just need to configure the behavior (archive or delete) in the email account configuration settings.

In iOS 4.1 swipe to delete is no longer available. It only archives them. I find this very annoying since there is no single click method for deleting anymore. Unless there is an option to change swipe back to delete.

Swipe to delete does archive by default, but this can be changed by going to "settings > mail, contacts, calendar > (under accounts select your email address) > archive messages 'no'"
This will make your swipe to archive, swipe to delete.

I wasn't aware of the delete function on the calculator, so that's definitely helpful! Did you know that you can also double tap on the number screen to get the Copy/Paste options as well?
