Horizontal typing! What a concept!
The iPhone's Mail and Notes applications can only compose messages in a vertically-oriented perspective, with the keyboard just a footnote at the bottom. EasyWriter Pro kicks you into landscape-mode, freeing your fingers to amble luxuriously across the wider letters. Just open EasyWriter, turn your iPhone sideways, type your message, choose your recipient, and click Send to Mail. Presto! No more complaining!
OK, some complaining. A Send to Text option would be nice, but you can always email yourself a note.
Another handy feature, text clippings, allows you to save text “snippets” to a library for later use--like if you’re constantly writing home as you leave the office or emailing your favorite delivery order to a wired restaurant. So it’s not exactly copy and paste, but hey, it helps.
EasyWriter is far from perfect, though. Since the developers obviously targeted iPhone’s shortcomings, we wanted a robust spellchecker to go beyond Apple's built-in typing corrector. And while sending new email is a snap, replying is a pain, requiring a series of switches between Mail and EasyWriter, which is hardly worth the effort.
EasyWriter Pro was updated to version 2.0 just as we published this review. Look for coverage of the latest edition soon.
Even without frills, EasyWriter Pro aptly gives a bigger keyboard to compose email, making it a crucial upgrade for our fat-fingered friends.
Creates landscape email. Stores common phrases for quick use. 
No SMS integration. No spellchecker beyond iPhone default. Clunky workaround for replying to emails.

While I love my iPhone 3G I'm also disappointed at seeing how Apple avoids providing updates that will further advance the device in the smartphone market. Landscape typing for both email and SMS is one such feature that Apple could if they wanted to provide for free in a firmware update. Add to that A2DP, video recording, multiple attachments in Mail, MMS, sync Notes with OS X Leopard's Notes, To Do list that syncs with Leopard's To Do list, Birthdates to show in the iPhone Calendar and sync with iCal.

Thanks for the review! Last night Apple approved version 2.0 of EasyWriter Pro, which includes two new features:
1) A spell checker that is as powerful as any desktop spell checker, but fits in the iPhone UI.
2) Blackberry-style AutoText so you can type something short (like "sig") and have it automatically replaced by a longer text clipping.
Because of these additions, the price was increased to $2.99. I've had a few emails from existing users who just upgraded and absolutely loved the new features, which was pretty exciting.
As for the texting: I would absolutely LOVE to add texting capabilities, and unfortunately Apple doesn't allow iPhone apps to send text messages. If it every becomes possible I'll be sure to add it.
