Rolando

The Prince is out of control--it's up to you to reign him in!
Rolando is a cheery and clever iPhone platformer. The game certainly doesn't break any new ground, but it's a lot of fun.
Your goal is to get as many rolly-polly Rolandos--and possibly a Royal Rolando--through the door at the end of each level. You select a single Rolando by tapping it; from there, you roll it along the landscape by tilting left or right. Jump over enemies and up to higher ledges by swiping a finger up. It's easy to move one Rolando at a time, but moving more than one can be taxing. Ronaldos are grouped together by dragging your finger over any that you see; once selected, they'll all follow your actions. But as each one adheres to the game's physics, they get separated quickly. And a number of inconsistencies in the control scheme--notably the selection and deselection process--make group movement even harder.
Royal Rolandos add a fun wrinkle to the game. Every few stages, you're asked to escort one of these special characters to the end-of-level door. You have no control over the Royal, so you'll have to use regular Rolandos to nudge it in the right direction. Each Royal has a particular problem--the king is always asleep and the prince constantly rolls around in a rage--and herding them takes patience and a plan. Lose track of a Royal, and you'll almost certainly have to restart the level. This raises the difficulty considerably, targeting Rolando at regular game players, not casual dabblers.
Throughout the challenge, the graphics are colorful and fluid, with background animation that polishes Rolandoland. The gaming experience is enhanced with an awesome soundtrack by Mr. Scruff, but if you're not down with his electro-groove, you can substitute your own tracks.
Rolando is a challenging game and a great companion on morning commutes, but its difficulty may put off casual gamers.
