iPhone Apps Safari

iPhone Apps Safari

The final release of the iPhone SDK is quickly approaching. As we impatiently await new apps, the Mac|Life staff has been speculating on what apps are already in the works by some of our favorite companies.

We're hoping Sling Media will have a Sling Player ready for the iPhone and that TiVo creates an iPhone app that will simplify online scheduling.

Before we start calling these companies to get the status on their iPhone app development, we decided to ask our readers what company's app they are hoping will arrive soon. Just drop your iPhone app wishes in the comments below and we'll try to get the developer to spill the beans on the likelihood of the app seeing the light of day.

UPDATE: We'll be calling on Thursday, so be sure to have your comment in by late Wednesday night.

I don't have an iPhone yet but when I do, I want an unabridged dictionary that does not depend on the internet. Random House Websters produces a fairly good one, but I'm not sure it's available for the iPhone. Internal memory required is about half a gig, I believe.

Another thing I will want is to rapidly look up trivia through google. I think that option already exists.

A third app I need is Crossword Compiler. I'm a crossword constructionist and this ap gives me a media-ready crossword, among other things.

Thanks.

Definitely a dictionary, I hate needing to connect to the internet for the web app.

I want a 5Megapixel or higher camera capable of shooting stills you can send anywhere (webupload, MMS, Bluetooth,WiFi w/geotagging) and a video camera with a full editing suite that allows for audio editing as well as the ability to send via bluetooth, MMS, Wifi, Web upload. I mean it's a multimedia device right, so what's up?!?!?!?! All this compatible with imovie, iphoto and idvd. I mean the nokia n95 has it and they aren't the only ones!!

An application isn't going to be able to upgrade the iPhone's image sensor.

iWork and Numbers.

Oh and I DO NOT want Flash player.

avatar

Michael Dunlop

why would you not want Flash player?

avatar

How about voice-dial, voice commands and digital recording capabilities?

a keynote/powerpoint like app. I don't know who you would ask.

I think it would be cool if the gimp team were to come out with a simple, drawing/photo editing app.

BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY why on earth does Flash STILL not work on the iphone????? I would have thought by now adobe would have made something for iPhones safari! WHAT THE CRAP? the thing has been out forever now! HELLO ADOBE? HELLO APPLE? what is up?

How about an iPhone version of Microsoft Office with the ability to sync your work on the iPhone with your desktop Mac.

I would like to see an E-book reader, and also a to-do list like palm.

Call up iSilo and ask whether they are working on an iSilo app for the iPhone. This would truly open up the iPhone to the medical world of doctors and nurses:-)

I'm not trying to advertise but this is something everyone with an iPhone should check out and will probably want

There is a whole bunch of stuff my Treo (as flawed as it is) does much better than iPhone. SDK and software V2 will be a huge step forward.

Games: Scrabble, Bejeweled, Bowling.

PDA Utilities: A really good calendar / to do list (like DateBook for Palm).

Productivity Apps: Versions of Word and Excel (like what DataViz offers on Palm).

if this is for what web apps exist that we'd like to see be made native
I'd say Bejeweled, Frenzic, Lumina, an IM program, video would be nice
and other things we need
COPY & PASTE
landscape keyboard in ALL typing apps
search function in contacts
smart to do list that syncs with calendar and highlights dates and events in texts and emails
notes sync
iWorks if it can just play and Keynotes and display Number fine as long as we can create, edit, and sync docs on Pages

I'm pretty sure the idea isn't what new features you'd like to see Apple implement on the iPhone. It is what third party apps you'd like to see. No Apple-sanctioned third party developer is going to be able to add cut-and-paste, accelerometer support, or printing to existing iPhone apps. The iPhone SDK doesn't even allow apps to operate in the background. It sure as heck isn't going to allow apps to modify the way other apps run.

I would like an eReader application, a shopping list and a password vault.

I would like to be able to record video. And also be able to send pictures though text messaging. Not all my friends have email on there phone and I want to be able to revive and send photos and videos though my phone. Also I would like to see flash available for the iPhone.

Ben

instant support for google docs

skp viewer

control 4 remote interface

logmein support

file sharing support (integrated file system)

I'm looking forward to the games that are going to come out for the iPhone and the touch

Cha-Ching is the only useful non-game app I can think of.

I would like to print email over wireless connection.

A fully-loaded Scrabble app exactly like the Mac software put out by GameHouse, Inc.

Definitely a password protection application that allows me to keep username and passwords protected.

avatar

There is... it's called 1password. Visit 1password.com.
I use it all the time. It's awesome. However I'd like it to be a true application on the iPhone, not just an applet in the browser.

Call me stupid but I can't for the life of me figure out what the title of this story means. iPhones Apps Safari --- what does that mean?

avatar

Roberto Baldwin

I didn't realize I had an "s" at the end of iPhone. Now it should mean that it's a safari or hunt for iPhone applications.

Now I get it. Thanks.

But shouldn't it then be iPhone-Apps Safari?

Yes, I'm picky.

When I used a Palm device, I had PocketQuicken to keep tabs of my debit card, credit card and check writing activities during the day and it sync'ed to my computer's Quicken program.
How about it Intuit? A native iPhone PocketQuicken application.
I have tried Quicken Online and it does not stand up to a native application.

avatar

Ditto! I want a small utility that will let me enter daily transactions (cash, credit card) and then import them into Quicken on my Mac.

CUT & PASTE!
Accelerometer should work in all apps!
video camera

Yes! Video Camera!!

I would probably most like to see iChat released. They should also redesign the text messaging interface because it too closely resembles iChat on macs.

If iChat or some comparable IM program were to become available for the iPhone, it would have enormous support and likely encourage others to adopt the iPhone. None of the other IM applications work well at all, especially if you are idle for more than a minute and your screen turns off.

I want a fully functional, 24/7 IM program that never goes offline.

I'd like to be able to secure certain contact records with a password while having easy and free access to others.

For example I'd like to password protect contact info for my bank or other financial institutions, but have easy access to friend's phone numbers, web surfing, etc.
