iPhone Sales Skyrocket, Irate iPhone Users, and More
Posted 07/02/2007 at 1:48:38pm | by Mac|Life Staff

Apples sells a whole lotta iPhones: The analyst guessing game kicked off today. One analyst thinks that Apple sold over 500,000 iPhones, exceeding the estimated sales projection of 200,000. A different analyst thinks that Apple sold 200,000 iPhones. Yet another analyst thinks that Apple will beat its goal to sell 10 million iPhone by 2008, but yet another analyst thinks that Apple undersold, based on the fact that few Apple stores ran out of iPhones. Guess it's easier to believe that the iPhone undersold rather than thinking that Apple manufactured more than enough to meet demand. And to top off the analyst thought brigade, one analyst thinks that Apple will be a top-selling smartphone vendor in the next two to three years. The same analyst says the iPhone could be the fastest selling Apple product in history, outselling the iPod nano.

iPhone activation problems: The iPhone wasn't without its hiccups. Many users had activation problems, including Mac|Life's reviews editor. AT&T says its servers were overloaded, but they've made adjustments to better serve customers.

Satisfied iPhone customers: The professional critics have chimed in, but what does the general consumer think? USA Today surveyed 350 iPhone customers, and most of them are happy with the iPhone. There's one large contingency that's pissed at Apple: electronics retailers who wish they could be in on the iPhone madness.

Watch our for the iPhone scams: The iPhone craze wouldn't be a craze without people looking to scam others. iPhone scams are everywhere on the Web, and eBay auctions are asking for $200 to $500 over the retail price. If you haven't bought your iPhone yet and you want to shop online, there really isn't a reason to not buy from the online Apple Store. You might have to wait a few days longer than if you bought on eBay, but why pay over the retail price?

iPhone battery replacement: In case you were wondering, you have to pay $86 to have Apple replace the iPhone battery. The process takes three business days, and your iPhone data will not be preserved. Apple's Web site doesn't say if they will give you a loaner iPhone while you battery is being replaced - our take: don't hold your breath...

avatarHmmmm the battery

Hmmmm the battery replacement seems like they just give you a new iPhone, hence the "no data preserved"! Looking at the iPhone Disassmbly (http://stream.ifixit.com/) from ifixit, the battery is soldered onto the logic board, which makes it pretty darn hard to replace.

avatarNew iPhone?

Hmmmm, take two: Eighty-six bucks for a completely new iPhone sounds like a very low "cost of materials" figure, even more so if you factor in shipping. Now, if that's the cost for a new logic board (with soldered-on battery), that might be a wee bit more reasonable.

avatarProbably not new...

but refurbished. Your not likely sending them a "new" iPhone if your battery is dead, so why would they send you a "new" one back?

avatarApple undersold?

It sounds a bit plausible when you visit Apple's Online Store, and notice the iPhone is not even in the list of 'Top Sellers'.

avatariPhone won't be in top 10 on website anytime soon

To the poster who is claiming slow sales because the iPhone is not listed in the top sellers on Apple's website I say why would anyone be purchasing it on the website. It was available in stores all weekend. If you purchased it online you would be waiting a month to receive it. I don't think early adopters are willing to wait a month, do you?

avatarCouldn't that be said of

Couldn't that be said of just any product? Why order an iPod nano online (and wait till it gets delivered) if you can just pick one up in any store?
Actually, the iPod nano has a much better availability in stores, because it isn't limited to Apple Stores and AT & T Stores. You can buy them anywhere. So why would those people order it online?

avataryour phone

Of course you get your own iphone back, the process for replacing the battery is almost automated.
What about the people who have engraved names on the back.
Dont believe me, scratch your name inside.
Lets do some thinking before talking.
